Excerpt from The Morningside, Vol. 2: February 2, 1897

For the past few years the orthodox way for a Columbia show to be conducted has been to have the large majority of the college men papered in to the performances, and to have the New York society women pay all the expenses. Now this was an excellent scheme, and entirely acceptable to every one about Columbia. Unfortunately, however, the New York society women are showing signs of weariness, and it looks very much as if in the near future Columbia will be forced to pay her own expenses. It strikes us it would be a good idea for the undergraduates to get into practice for future years of self-support by having, say, a third of them, go to Cleopatra and pay for themselves like little men; and let each gentle reader remember that he is a third little man.
