The special divine gifts of the Holy Ghost were comprehended in the promise called, " The blessing of Abraham," which was to come on the Gentile world, foretold and earnestly desired by the prophets, as will appear in the following Scriptures, "I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring" (Isa. xliv. 3; compare Acts ii. 38, 39). "As for me this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord: my Spirit that is upon thee," &c, " shall not depart out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed''s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and forever " (Isa. lix. 21). "And it shall come to pass in that day," &c. "that I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplications" (Zech. xii. 9, 10). "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh," &c.; "and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids inthosedays willlpour out my Spirit" (Joel ii. 28, 29). The office of the Holy Ghost, prominently distinguished throughout the Scriptures, is that of the Sanclifier (1 Pet. i. 2). The Church of all ages, and individual believers, are sanctified by his presence, inhabitation, or abiding with them (Rom. viii. 9--27), or setting them apart in the kingdom of grace, preparatory to their glorious immortality; and all the holy actings of repentance, faith, and good works, which make up their spiritual existence, are but the fruits and manifestations of the Spirit, of which every sincere Christian partakes in kind, though not all in the same degree. This "holiness, without which no man can see the Lord," is a " seal " of our redemption from all sin and sorrow, ...
