Ethelred Betts is a reporter on a country paper in the East Anglian town of Swalechurch, on the island of Poldey. When Professor Jago disappears on New Year's Eve, he spies a scoop. On New Year's Day, however, the story takes an even more sensational turn when the local constabulary are approached by a farm labourer, who has discovered the Professor's body: stabbed, beaten and tied to a pole in the middle of a cornfield. In conjunction with his old university tutor, Betts sets out to investigate the macabre murder. But the solution to the crime is more strange, more terrible and more tragic than even he could have imagined...

Originally published in 1927, this is an atmospheric murder mystery from the golden age of crime fiction.
