Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best This is the first Penny I have read and it won't be the last! Head of homicide Armand Gamache is on an annual retreat with his wife in the middle of nowhere when murder occurs, of course. The suspects come mainly from one family who are at each other’s throats most of the time, but Gamache must first find out how a statue weighing several tons of stone came crashing down on the victim without leaving any scratch marks on the pedestal it was resting on. This delightfully descriptive and humorous novel reminded me of Agatha Christie and Caroline Graham.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another good one! I'm hooked on Louise Penny's mystery novels - particularly those featuring Armand Gamache! This one was a little different in that it doesn't take place in Three Pines and away from the residents of Three Pines that we've grown to love, however, Louise kept me guessing "who dunnit" until the very end ! I would recommend it if you enjoy her previous novels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Murder Amongst Tranquility A deviation from the first four books; this Armand Gamache detective novel is set in a tranquil setting with a historical lodge perched beside a lake in the wilderness. I enjoyed this novel as it connected some of the characters from the Three Pines village while changing up the scenery. I always enjoy how Louise Penny develops new characters in each of her novels while keeping others creating a sense of familiarity in the series. No the series is not for the readers who like the gruesome and gory aspect of some detective novels instead focusing on the characters' relationships and emotional struggles. If your searching for a good but easy read and prefer the emotional over the scientific aspect of investigation then this is a great option.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is not a Grisham, Reichs or Connelly murder plot! One dimensional murder plot, not much in the way of forensics or suspense. Odd and unlikely characters, including the guilty maitre d, the genderless child, the infatuated policeman and the psychotic matriarch. Lengthy descriptions of scenery and needless crazy self-talk by the characters add to the length of the book without adding value. An overall disappointment!
