Ann Radcliffe (1764 – 1823) was one of the first English authors who discovered the world of Gothic novel in English literary. Style of her works has more features in romantic landscapes and long travel scenes including supernatural details.
“The Mysteries of Udolpho” is one of the best Gothic romances including rich incidents of physical terror and psychological elements. Here the reader can be acquainted wih remote, crumbling castles, unknown supernatural events, a brooding , scheming villain and a persecuted heroine. Some editors considered the work a little boring due to its extensive descriptions of exotic landscapes in the Pyrenees and Apennines. The plot of the romance has much a human life than a story.
