about

The Night Drummer is the story of two teenage friends--white, middle-class Peter Ellis, and Otis James, a native boy adopted by an older evangelical Christian couple. Peter and Otis grow up in small town Ontario in the 1970s, and the novel follows them through their high school years where both confront challenges that require them to decide who they are and who they want to be, decisions that will have profound consequences not only for themselves, but for their friends and family.
Nominated for the Stephen Leacock and ReLit Awards, Paul Nicholas Mason is a prize-winning playwright and author of Battered Soles and The Red Dress. He lives in Peterborough, Ontario.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thoughtful and entertaining The Night Drummer kept me up reading past my bedtime, so by my estimation, that makes it a good novel. The main characters are believable, unique and memorable, and the story caught me up. Mason manages to strike that so-important balance between social commentary and light-hearted entertainment. The novel explores the heights and failings of human behaviour while also keeping readers turning the pages with its comedic and surprising plot twists.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Mason novel to date! I loved it! I stayed up late a few nights in a row because I couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next, yet I was also dreading finishing the book too. The characters were written in such a way that I immediately felt drawn in by them. They were real. Great summer reading, and I can't wait for his next book!
