In this "magnificent" Hugo Award winner and NYT Notable Book, an avenger's daughter grows more powerful every day--and her choices may destroy the world. (NPR)

This is the way the world ends, for the last time.

The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night.

Essun -- once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger -- has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever.

Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An epic series! This is the second book in The Broken Earth series by Jemisin. Like the first book in this series, The Obelisk Gate was the 2017 winner of the Hugo Award. I feel that these books offer a series of snapshots into the work that Jemisin has created. As with most fantasy novels, one has to pay attention throughout the entire series in order to pick up on the deeper narratives that are taking place. While these are well written and I enjoyed reading them, neither book has really stuck with me so I'm craving Book 3, as has happened to me with other series. Still this is a stellar series and especially if you are a fan of epic fantasy novels. Book 1 was stronger than Book 2 as The Obelisk Gate has a feeling of a lot of posturing and set up for Book 3. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series ends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Follow-up Almost as fantastic as Fifth Season. If I could, I would rate it 4.5/5 (going on 5/5). The story lost some of the elegant and novel structure and momentum of Fifth Season. In terms of content, compared with the first book, there is too much Essun and not enough Syen. On the other hand, there is more interesting stuff with Hoa, who I love, so that evens it out for me. Still, keeping in mind that middle-of-the-series books are generally tough, this one is very very satisfying.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sequel A great follow up to The Fifth Season. Not five stars for me because I always seem to feel just a bit let down by the world building of Jemisin’s novels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As good as a sequel as you could hope for The Obelisk Gate, while it lacks that one narrative conceit about its predecessor, it delivers an even more fascinating story with a diverse cast of characters and problems for Essun to grapple with. The Broken Earth Trilogy excels in how it has created this incredible world which feels so alien, while focusing the story itself on this deeply personal situation of the main character, who despite having been through so much in her life, is a mother who wants to find her daughter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but... I loved the first book - the premise, the writing, the characters. I thought this book just tries too hard. It got a little too confusing at one point. I'd still recommend it though, it's a wonderful series, and the first book gets you hooked. I'm in the middle of book 3 and I cannot wait to see what happens (but also don't want it to end!)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You don't want it to end, but you NEED to know what happens The second novel in the Broken Earth series did not disappoint. The characters continue to evolve just as the story continues to grip you. I love this series and would recommend it to anyone. regardless of whether they typically read fantasy or not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST FANTASY SERIES EVER N.K. Jemisin, in my opinion, is absolutely amazing. She will make you fall in love and also completely break your heart. I can't wait until the third book comes out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I love this series. I love this series so much. I cannot wait for the third one. It's so imaginative, so creative, while all the while, being so real. So heartbreakingly real. N.K. Jemisin is a total genius. I wish I could write half as well as she can. I love the characters, I love the way they intertwine and interact, and I love how the plot is never lost. Through each of the characters' journeys, the feeling of the book remains crisp. I just. I love this series. Please read it, if you can.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful fantasy series A great second entry in Jemisin's Broken Earth series. It was great to learn more about the world as a whole, Guardians, Stone-eaters and the opposite side of the world. Everything is so detailed and meshes together so well within the world. I'm certainly looking forward to, what should be, the epic conclusion of this series.

Editorial Reviews

"Heartbreaking, wholly unexpected, and technically virtuosic, The Fifth Season is a tour-de-force. I felt every shock--and the book is packed with them--in my marrow. It's no exaggeration to say that Jemisin expands the range of what great fantasy can be."-Brian Staveley, author of The Emperor's Blades
