about

Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

Katherine Applegate's many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture bookThe Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novelHome of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.Katherine was inspired to writeThe One...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Only One of its Kind The One and Only Ivan is a light-hearted book that will hug you and leave you in a river of tears... Ivan is no ordinary gorilla. This book captures his world of agony and joy. If you adore this book you MUST MUST MUST read The Underneath by Kathi Appelt if you haven't already done so!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Class Read Invested in a class set (well, six copies plus a teacher's guide) because this is a great book that addresses an issue that is important to me (animal rights) in an emotional and engaging story for children. There are parts of this story that are heartbreaking, parts that refuse to shy away from ugly realities I was certain would be glossed over to make the story more palatable for kids. The story of Ivan, like the story of so many captive wild animals, does not have a happy ending, but it does have an ending that is as happy as can be reasonably expected, and this important story will spark conversations and shape opinions in this next generation. This is a quick read, but it isn't an easy one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read aloud My grade 3 class loved this book. The story is well written and the short chapters made them laugh at times. It also inspired them to write chapter books. The characters are easy to love and interesting. An engaging heartfelt book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Book Club Favourite Our local library starts our kid's book club (Book Buddies, grades 5 & 6) with this book every year, and it is always a hit. In fact at the end of the year when you ask the kids their favourite it is sure to be remembered. Highly recommend for boy and girls ages 10-12.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poignant and Important! This is a touching and beautifully written, yet simple novel written from the perspective of a Silverback Gorilla named Ivan who is living in captivity. It definitely is a statement about the state of many captive animals and the cruelty and hardship they endure whether it is out of ignorance or intentional. I absolutely loved it and Katherine Applegate captures the "humanity" of our animal friends beautifully. It should also be noted that this novel won the Newberry Award for 2013 - well deserved!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Adults My mom, who is 45, fell in love with the cover and then this book. She lent it to me, and I loved it as well. The language is really great at weaving together elements that would appeal to kids as well as adults. For example, talking animals reveal the dirty underbelly of animals used for entertainment, poaching, etc. and thus it is still really appropriate for kids. I enjoyed this book so much that I actually went out and bought another kids' novel, and am loving that one too! Good stories are for any age! #plumreview #kidsfiction

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read It has always been a struggle for me to get my daughter to unplug and just sit and read. This is the first book we have found where I didn't have to nag her to read, she wanted to sit and find out what happens. The story is sweet and a bit of a tear jerker. I definitely recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book! My 10 year old son is a very reluctant reader, but we read this book together and he never wanted us to put it down! Led to some very deep discussions and brought up some strong feelings. Great book to hook an animal lover!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adorable book! This book is about falling down but getting the courage to get up! Ivan is a simple gorilla with a boring life in a Big Top Mall where he is famous for a silverback. But then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family. That is when Ivan realizes that Ruby doesn't belong here and has to find a way to take her to a safer home. But how? This book is perfect for animal lovers (including me!) and I give this book 5 stars!
