Fifteen-year-old Junie is barely coping. Her mother has started sleeping in the chair in front of the TV, and the house is so packed with junk, newspapers, cupboard organizers and other helpful items from the Shopping Channel that she can barely get in the front door. Her father is no help, since he’s always with That Woman. To top it off, she’s failing math.

So when Wade Jaffre, the hot new guy at school, offers her a ride home from school, it seems too good to be true. Junie surprises herself by accepting—and even talking! But as they approach her house, her parents are outside, screaming at each other. Junie doesn’t have to think twice about directing him on to her best friend Tabitha’s house, nor about continuing the charade of pretending she lives there.

Tabitha and her mother are understanding—and willing to go along, for the moment. But as the weeks go by, Junie’s lies start piling up and the opportunity to tell the truth seems to slip away. Until one day, Junie’s world—and that of her mother’s—is literally turned inside out for everyone to see, and Junie and her mother must face the consequences f her mother’s illness ... and the lies they both told to hide it.

Award-winning author Carrie Mac is well-known for her adeptness at captivating young adult audiences; she has written ten books for young adults, and won the 2010 Sheila A. Egoff Book Prize for her previous work, The Gryphon Project. She lives with her family in Vancouver, BC.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from How do you come clean when your life is a mess? *Copy provided by publisher for review* The Opposite of Tidy by Carrie Mac, unfortunately, wasn't a title I was previously aware of until it was brought to my attention by a Penguin Canada publicist who contacted me in regards to possibly reviewing the title. It wasn't until I read the synopsis that I knew that it was a novel that I would absolutely enjoy! How do you come clean when your life is a mess? The Opposite of Tidy tells the story of Junie, a 15 year old girl who's barely making it as it is. While her mother sleeps in the living room allowing the house to pile to the roof with trash, Junie finds herself keeping the secret of her at-home life away from everyone at school. Unfortunately, when she meets Wade Jaffre, a total hottie and the new guy at school, all that begins to change for Junie. Unbearably embarrassed by her living situation, Junie finds herself lying to Wade and involving her best friend in something that could easily blow out of proportion. Can Junie handle the consequences of lying? The Opposite of Tidy by Carrie Mac is the first novel I've read that has so openly spoken of the issues when it comes to having a family member who is a helpless hoarder. Like many other individuals, I myself have sat in front of the television watching "Hoarders", real life situations where people find themselves being nearly buried alive in items and trash that they just can't part with. Unfortunately, I've never understood much of what a hoarder goes through or their emotional attachment to their belongings, but The Opposite of Tidy certainly helped me down the path of understanding. With the situation of Junie's mother being brought up constantly throughout the novel, I began to feel incredibly emotionally involved in Junie's story. Having someone she loved going through something difficult and feeling like she was at the point of being dragged down with them was certainly tough, and Carrie Mac did a wonderful job bringing out those incredibly realistic emotions. Junie was an amazing character. Unfortunately, I didn't always find myself agreeing with much of what she did throughout The Opposite of Tidy. Luckily, Carrie Mac's latest gives the reader hope that Junie and the novel's secondary characters will pull through for the better in the end. Readers with a hankering for emotional reads should definitely add The Opposite of Tidy by Carrie Mac to their reading piles.
