Excerpt from The Past Tenses in French: A Study of Certain Phases of Their Meaning and Function; A Dissertation Submitted to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University in Conformity With the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

The subject for the present study was suggested by Professor E. G. Armstrong, under whose direction the investigation has been made. The French tenses have already been discussed at length by many writers, and the particular uses in which they appear have been classified. A statistical study would still be of value, in answering some questions as to actual usage; no attempt has been made, however, in the present work, to deal with the material from this standpoint. The writer's aim has been to prepare the way for a clearer understanding of the past definite by a consideration of inceptive value in this tense; and to call attention to certain phenomena of the compound tenses heretofore not brought out. In the preparation of these chap ters, considerable material has been collected which bears upon the nature of the past definite and the imperfect; this has been reserved for separate publication at a later date.

The results here published have been Obtained from the study of a variety of texts, so chosen as to include all periods of the French language from the twelfth century to the present time. Prose works of a more or less popular character have in general been given the preference, due to their naturalness of expression and to their freedom from Latin influence. The examples chosen from these sources have been arranged in chronological order. It has been thought advisable to adopt a uniform system for marking accents in the older language, and the diacritical marks have thus been slightly altered, though the orthography is always retained.
