The astounding yet true rags-to-riches saga of a homeless father who raised and cared for his son on the mean streets of San Francisco and went on to become a crown prince of Wall Street

At the age of twenty, Milwaukee native Chris Gardner, just out of the Navy, arrived in San Francisco to pursue a promising career in medicine. Considered a prodigy in scientific research, he surprised everyone and himself by setting his sights on the competitive world of high finance. Yet no sooner had he landed an entry-level position at a prestigious firm than Gardner found himself caught in a web of incredibly challenging circumstances that left him as part of the city's working homeless and with a toddler son. Motivated by the promise he made to himself as a fatherless child to never abandon his own children, the two spent almost a year moving among shelters, "HO-tels," soup lines, and even sleeping in the public restroom of a subway station.

Never giving in to despair, Gardner made an astonishing transformation from being part of the city's invisible poor to being a powerful player in its financial district.

More than a memoir of Gardner's financial success, this is the story of a man who breaks his own family's cycle of men abandoning their children. Mythic, triumphant, and unstintingly honest, The Pursuit of Happyness conjures heroes like Horatio Alger and Antwone Fisher, and appeals to the very essence of the American Dream.

Chris Gardner is the chief executive officer of Gardner Rich & Company, a multimillion-dollar brokerage with offices in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. An avid philanthropist and motivational speaker, Gardner is a recipient of the Father of the Year Award from the National Fatherhood Initiative. He has two children and resides in...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Buy this used, unless you LOVE it I bought my copy of this at a used bookstore for $3. It's a good book, and it's uplifting because it shows someone that went from rock bottom to beyond a glass ceiling, via his own merit and personal conviction. I really like this book, but $18 is way too much for this. I'd say $10 max, but I'm a cheapskate sometimes..haha Still yeah grab it, or go see if it's at your local library. For all the crap going on in the world today, this should be a more important book than it is.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great read I did not expect the book to be the way it was, especially after watching the film before I read the book, but I thoroughly enjoyed the read. It was fun, and I often found myself relating to Gardner on a greater, and unusually , level. I would recommend this book to everyone who feels like they need to be inspired.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Uplifting! I would definitely recommend this book as an encouragement to reach for your career and life goals. Take all of life's curves and throw them back as a lesson learned and a stepping stone towards a better life. This is a “make you feel good” book full of encouragement and positive thoughts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A TRUE INSPIRATION TO ANYONE Not since "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" have I been this inspired by a man's story. Chris Gardner, though not a great author by any means, makes you feel like you are in a room with him and he's telling you his story. I never wanted to put this book down and at times felt like I was living the story. Some of that is probably because there are a few moments in the book that mirror my own life experiences. For anyone who feels that their economic situation will prevent them from obtaining success or finding their own happiness, READ THIS BOOK!!! If Chris Gardner could get what he wanted from life, anyone can!
