Set in the magical world of Renthia, The Queen of Blood is Sarah Beth Durst’s ambitious entry into adult epic fantasy. With the danger of Peter Brett’s The Warded Man, heart of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, and lyricism of Patrick Rothfuss’ The Name of the Wind, this is the first chapter in a series destined to be a classic.

Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .

But the spirits that reside within this land want to rid it of all humans. One woman stands between these malevolent spirits and the end of humankind: the queen. She alone has the magical power to prevent the spirits from destroying every man, woman, and child. But queens are still just human, and no matter how strong or good, the threat of danger always looms.

With the position so precarious, young women are chosen to train as heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Ven, a disgraced champion, has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. Joining forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits’ restlessness—a journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . .  before it’s bathed in blood.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Fantasy Book I really liked this booked, finished it within 2 days. It flowed well, a little boring at times but the rest made up for it. I like that the author didn't focus too much on romance (which is where other books lose me sometimes). I gave it four stars because while I really liked it, I didn't *love* it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Different! I absolutely devoured this book! Although some parts were slow and frustrating, it made up for the drier readings with action-packed pages and jaw-dropping turnarounds that have you slamming the book shut only to flip it back open again to keep reading. An awesome read with some interesting characters and a different writing style that I loved. Now halfway through the second book and falling in love with the characters from the first novel all over again. A great series with an interesting plot and layout, and even better characters and adventure story line!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really good book I really liked this book. Definitely isn't one of the absolute best fantasy novels I've read lately, but I really enjoyed the concept and felt it wasn't something that had been done before. I am looking forward to reading the sequel!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Refreshing This was a really refreshing and incredibly well written story of a girl discovering her potential. I am very glad that I gave this book a chance and I cannot wait to see what book 2 has to offer! There was a hint of "romance" that kind of felt instalove-ish but I really ended up enjoying it because it didnt take up much of the story. Sarah is really good at painting a perfect picture of her setting and the world building was easy to follow without feeling like it was missing something.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay Concept of the world seemed interesting, however, the storyline fell flat at times.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I wanted to love it. I love the world that Sarah has created. That was the main reason I stuck with it. But it lacked the character development that I need in a book. I want to get to know the characters. To feel something for them. I didn't get that from this book. I am curious to see if the story goes a little deeper in the second one so I will likely give it a try.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Concept This is another book that I very much wanted to like but in the end, found it to be just meh. It had a great concept but I found it to be very difficult to visualize, as the world in which the story takes place is in the forest. A realm where people live in trees. Like the concept but again, found it very hard to picture. The main character was likable enough and she is stronger than some other heroines but I still couldn't connect with her. Maybe it was just me and I wasn't feeling a fantasy novel at the time of reading. I think many others would enjoy the book, as it is unique and different.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great concept; average execution of story Another book that I really liked the concept of but wasn't a giant fan of the execution. More specifically, I wish this book had a prequel so I could have a better grasp of the world/history rather than just leaping forward in time every once and a while. Also, there were moments in which I became tired of being TOLD rather than SHOWN something I needed to know. Overall, as with many books, interesting enough that I'll read the next one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It!! The Queen of Blood was AMAZING! If you're a big fan of anything fantasy and strong headed heroines who kick butt and don’t take no for an answer, this book is perfect. Loved how the characters aren't all perfect, that they all have their own obstacles to overcome. I did not expect to get hooked so quickly! It really was one of those books you can’t put down, one of those stories you keep on thinking about even when you’re not reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a gripping tale about a girl who pushes herself in order to grow and protect the people she loves. Daleina is a wonderfully written main character, one who has flaws that she is constantly trying to overcome. She fights back self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy and fear. It is refreshing to be presented with a main character who is not always perfect, but who accepts and overcomes her flaws with grace. This book is a suitable read for mature teens that are searching for their next fantasy adventure. The Queen of Blood examines how the human race impacts nature and how we tend to abuse our planets resources. Recommended for readers who enjoyed The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen, Uprooted by Naomi Novik and The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.
