This collection of linked poems from David Levithan, the author of the New York Times bestseller Every Day and the groundbreaking classic Boy Meets Boy and the co-author of Will Grayson, Will Grayson (with John Green), will introduce you to a world of unforgettable and emotionally resonant voices.

Here’s what I know about the realm of possibility—
it is always expanding, it is never what you think
it is. Everything around us was once deemed
impossible. From the airplane overhead to
the phones in our pockets to the choir girl
putting her arm around the metalhead.
As hard as it is for us to see sometimes, we all exist
within the realm of possibility. Most of the limits
are of our own world’s devising. And yet,
every day we each do so many things
that were once impossible to us.

Enter The Realm of Possibility and meet a boy whose girlfriend is in love with Holden Caulfield; a girl who loves the boy who wears all black; a boy with the perfect body; and a girl who writes love songs for a girl she can’t have.

These are just a few of the captivating characters readers will get to know in this intensely heartfelt new novel about those ever-changing moments of love and heartbreak that go hand-in-hand with high school. David Levithan plumbs the depths of teenage emotion to create an amazing array of voices that readers won’t forget. So, enter their lives and prepare to welcome the realm of possibility open to us all. Love, joy, and these stories will linger.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Masterpiece I've long been a fan of David Levithan; he's the perfect blend of a writer possessing a deeply powerful, respectful command of language combined with a vision of grace and the best, most vulnerable human ways of being in the world. This book is something special though. It's a snapshot of life in an unnamed high school told through the perspectives of 20 students. Each student is represented in poetry --some we can imagine the character wrote themselves, some simply representing their thoughts. Each poem is surprising, intimate, personal. The story progresses chronologically as well as by character. Through the voices of his characters, Levithan makes us powerfully aware of the complexity of people --how even the most one-dimensional human being is a complicated set of circumstances, emotions and responses, and how we all so deeply change and touch one another often without even knowing it. It's delightful to find one character in the poem of another, to figure out the subtle differences and nuances, to notice how one small event for one character changed things profoundly for another. It's easy to feel sorry for characters who don't get a chapter! Every time a student's name is mentioned, I went to look to see if they had a section of poetry so I could get to know them better. I know I will be returning to the book a few times not only to read the beautiful prose but also to look for other hidden connections I may have missed in my first reading. The poetry is excellent and Levithan experiments with a number of genres and styles. There are short, haiku-like poems, songs, longer free-verse entries and one poem that experiments with the letters of the alphabet. (I hope I'm not giving anything away. The shock of discovery of how each poem works is part of the delight of reading this book.) If readers are "not a fan of poetry" or "don't know how to read poems," they will after this novel. And they won't even notice they're doing it after a while. I fell in love with more than half the characters and I was pretty emotional by the end of the book. THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY reminded me of how complicated everyone's life is, and how beautiful; how we not only each have a story but the possibility of one told in poetry. Levithan renders human complexity vulnerable and touching. I can honestly say that the novel reminded me to look at the people in my life --and myself-- a bit more tenderly. THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY creates a world I'd like to live in, and one David Levithan invites us to create for ourselves. Highly recommended. THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY will linger.
