about

#1 bestselling author John Grisham’s The Reckoning is his most powerful, surprising, and suspenseful thriller yet.

“A murder mystery, a courtroom drama, a family saga…The Reckoning is Grisham's argument that he's not just a boilerplate thriller writer. Most jurors will think the counselor has made his case.”
USA Today

 October 1946, Clanton, Mississippi

Pete Banning was Clanton, Mississippi’s favorite son—a decorated World War II hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning he rose early, drove into town, and committed a shocking crime.  Pete's only statement about it—to the sheriff, to his lawyers, to the judge, to the jury, and to his family—was: "I have nothing to say." He was not afraid of death and was willing to take his motive to the grave.

In a major novel unlike anything he has written before, John Grisham takes us on an incredible journey, from the Jim Crow South to the jungles of the Philippines during World War II; from an insane asylum filled with secrets to the Clanton courtroom where Pete’s defense attorney tries desperately to save him.

Reminiscent of the finest tradition of Southern Gothic storytelling, The Reckoning would not be complete without Grisham’s signature layers of legal suspense, and he delivers on every page.

Reviews

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Grisham's Best I typically love reading John Grisham books. About half of this book was about the second world war and the Americans fighting the Japanese in the Philippines. I did learn a lot about what happened in that area of the world during the war, but I felt like I was reading a history book about the war and not a John Grisham book. The war parts were quite explicit and very troubling to me (therefore not enjoyable). I liked the family in the story, however I didn't like the main character's "motive". The ending does have an interesting twist. I will recommend the book, only because some people might like the history of the war parts, which didn't appeal to me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Disturbing but Intriguing I learned a great deal about the infiltration of the Philippines in war times. John writes about the will of the human spirit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book but missing something for me I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I enjoyed reading this book but wished there was more substance to the underlying motive.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Reckoning The story line was interesting, the characters endearing. I did find the root of the plot a little unbelievable. Would one not ask someone they love above all others, upon learning of a fateful event in that persons life, what exactly happened, who was involved, and why?.... before making the decision to commit an act that consequently and irrevocably changes the lives of everyone you hold dear? I think not! This is what, for me, made the whole concept ludicrous. Sorry John Grisham. I am not sorry I read it, otherwise I would not have met the confused and lovable Banning family.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A little disappointing Not Grisham's best but not his worse. A little disappointed in this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This story has substance Unlike some of Grisham's recent books he has crafted a meaningful story with believable characters. For people who like war stories this is a good 'script'. Grisham could have created a better ending for my liking as this one lacked a certain sense of justice.
