PRINCIPLES OF INQUIRY--CAUSATION. PRELIMINARY NOTE. In commencing an inquiry into Hindu Philosophy, it is essentially necessary that both parties should start from common ground. Happily such ground can be easily discovered, in those simple principles of common-sense inquiry which God has planted in every intellect. These principles are not numerous, and at the same time they are so simple, that the. most untutored mind will at once acknowledge their truth. The Baconian method of in quiry, which exhibits them in full force, was not a new thing in the world. The principles themselves are as old as mankind: Bacon and others taught the necessity of applying them more rigidly, more justly and on a wider scale than philosophers had been accustomed to do. Even right principles applied in a contracted sphere may appear to lead to results which contradict almost universal experience.
