Take another declaration of our Saviour respecting this event: (John ii, 18-22)--"Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing thou doest these things ? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days ? But he spake of the temple of his body. When, therefore, he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this unto them; and they believed the Scriptures, and the word which Jesus had said." Mark the language of verse twentyone, " But he spake of the temple of his body." What else could the Jews destroy ? They could destroy his body, that is, they could kill his body, and nothing but his body; and the same body which the Jews could, and would destroy, he would raise up in three days after. Let us now see how the event fulfilled these prophecies: (Luke xxiv, 1-8)--" Now, upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: and as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead ? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
