about

When Eva’s film star sister Katrina dies, she leaves California and returns to Cornwall, where they spent their childhood summers, to scatter Katrina’s ashes and in doing so return her to the place where she belongs.

But Eva must also confront the ghosts from her own past, as well as those from a time long before her own. For the house where she so often stayed as a child is home not only to her old friends the Halletts, but also to the people who had lived there in the eighteenth century. When Eva finally accepts that she is able to slip between centuries and see and talk to the inhabitants from hundreds of years ago, she soon finds herself falling for Daniel Butler, a man who lived – and died – long before she herself was born.

Eva begins to question her place in the present, and in laying her sister to rest, comes to realise that she too must decide where she really belongs, choosing between the life she knows and the past she feels so drawn towards.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Once again Susanna Kearsley doesn't disappoint. Eva has gone to Cornwall to scatter her sisters ashes. While staying at the home of family friends she begins to travel back in time. It's completely out of her control when she shifts back and forth. She meets Daniel the current resident from the 1700's. They are in love with each other but can a relationship survive Eva being tossed back and forth between the 2 centuries. A great love story, lots of interesting history, strong emotions, and a ton of scandal. I adored this book. This author has that quality style of writing where you feel as if you're there and her books are impossible to put down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded my Expectations I picked this book off a 3 for $12 table. It sounded good, but I couldn't put this book down. I flew through it and felt sad when I was done it. I wanted more!! For a storyline that could be incredibly unbelievable and cheesy, Susanna makes it captivating. Fantastic writing and character development. I agree with other reviews that it would make an excellent movie!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Good Yarn The tale is a good yarn, primarily along the romantic side with touches of historical data incorporated throughout. The author provides a substantial amount of detail about the main characters which makes them all the more realistic. Although I found it a bit slow at the beginning, I soon began to enjoy the colourful characters and found it flowed along nicely. If you have never read a S. Kearsley’s book then I highly recommend “Mariana” as a first pick which was superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mesmerizing! I found it hard to put this book down. You're totally captivated by the events of Eva's life, especially her interaction with the people of the past she's so fortunate to meet through time travel. This is by far my favorite Kearsley novel...Mariana and the Winter Sea a close second. The characters and plot are richly woven and keep you immersed up to the very end. In all, an extremely well written and researched novel that stays with you long after you've finished it. Definitely a must read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful original story THE ROSE GARDEN is such a satisfying read. There are hints throughout about what MIGHT happen but they aren't revealed until the end. Not your standard romance but a wonderful twist with historical colour. So clever and well thought out, it's easy to suspend disbelief and become absorbed in Eva's life. The Cornwall location is what drew me to the book and I really feel I've had a holiday there. Well done, Susanna! I love your work!
