Excerpt: ... THE SCHOOLMASTER OF ABBACH, AND OTHEE TALES. THE SCISSOH-GRINDER. A CUSTOM prevails extensively in some parts of Germany, which is worthy of commendation. In the long winter evenings, the women and young folks assemble in rotation at the houses in the different villages, and employ their time in knitting and spinning or in sewing, while one of the party reads aloud for the benefit of the company, or relates a story, or details interesting fragments of history. A venerable blacksmith, who in the early part of the present century had seen some service in Spain, where he had buried a leg with all the honors of war, was on such occasions the greatest attraction of the spinning circle of the town in which he lived. He was, in fact, no ordinary man. Combining with great natural shrewdness the experience gleaned from long observation, and that genuine simplicity of character which is the fruit of genial, unaffected piety, Uncle Jacob exerted no small influence. Both the old and the young respected him, for he had gone through the world with his eyes open: he was honest as the day, and cheerful as the sunshine, outspoken in reproving what he deemed wrong in principle or practice, and always ready to encourage and commend the right. By patient industry and strict economy, he had secured a frugal competence for his old age, and, having outlived his family, he had few cares, lived much in the past, and sought to improve the present by using every opportunity to promote the well-being of his neighbors. His house was thus a favorite resort of the rustic circle, who beguiled the tediousness of the winter evenings with the busy handicraft which thrifty German women ply so deftly, through all the mysteries of cross-stitch, samplerwork, embroidery, and what not.
