Best known as the author of Tom Brown's Schooldays (1857), Thomas Hughes was immensely proud of his Berkshire roots. Riding on the success of his most famous creation, Hughes accepted an invitation to write a guidebook to the customs and traditions of his native region. Deciding that a straightforward guidebook would be too dry for his readers, Hughes opted instead to compile the information into a fictional narrative. The result is an intriguing novel-cum-guidebook, in which Hughes uses the story of a London clerk who visits the Vale of the White Horse to present his readers with a wealth of information about the famous monument, local antiquities and landmarks, local songs and poems and, of course, the periodic festival in which the White Horse is 'scoured' to maintain its striking appearance.

Out of print for many years, this new electronic edition of Hughes's neglected novel is a must for anyone wishing to discover more about the traditions and landscape of England's beautiful South-West.
