Chapter 1: Current Weight Loss Strategies and Why They Don’t Work Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.  James Baldwin With the obesity rates climbing higher and higher in this country, you don’t have to go far to find people who want to lose weight. The realization that with weight loss comes greater self-esteem, self-confidence and increased energy has many folks making the commitment to some kind of weight loss program or solution. Many people, when they find they have had enough, finally decide it’s time to make that commitment to themselves. They choose a method or program, plan or diet (a word I abhor). Perhaps they follow a program suggested by one of their friends or colleagues. Maybe they’ve seen an ad on TV for a weight-loss solution and decide it’s the one for them. Negative Perceptions of the Marketplace Regretfully there are plenty of people out there looking for a fast and painless solution that claims you can lose weight without changing your eating habits or adding exercise to your routine. I think we all know there are no silver bullets or magic pills, much as we’d like to believe the claims. The other day I was at the gym on the elliptical machine, which in my gym also has a TV attached. I usually listen to my iPod, but I had run out of battery power so I found myself flipping through the channels. I came across an ad for a new weight loss product so I paused to see what they were selling. Research I like to call it. Lots of bikini clad women and buffed dudes showing their “amazing results.” This product promises you can continue to eat all of your favorite foods and still lose weight. You just sprinkle the product on your food and you lose weight. I was sufficiently intrigued by their claims that I came home and did a Google search on the product. I did some looking around and found that not only did the product not work as claimed, but their “30 Day Money Back Guarantee” was bogus. There were claims by many who had purchased the product that they had tried and tried but had been unsuccessful in getting their money returned.
