It wasn't nec. for weight loss (though that had something to do with it), it was for a control for depression. I admit that I gorge myself on fruit quite often, so the first two weeks were really hard! But, as the author says, "If you're going to quit or chreat... CHEAT!" ... so I had a cup of tea with sugar every night and it got me through! I've just begun phase 3, and it's still working really well. I noticed that my belly flattened out (WOOHOO!) without crunches b/c that's where I stored excess sugar the most! It helped relieve depression symptoms as well, and balance my moods. My parents vowed to do it with me, and they both saw huge results!!! I'm really happy with this plan! It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle change :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic information I've been living SB since Feb 2004. I didn't lose much the first two weeks, but the increased energy levels were what kept me going. And I am so glad!! I lost 30 lbs in 6 months, & I have kept it off for 4 yrs. The book explains the process very clearly & thoroughly, and with weekly plans for each phase and recipes too. I'd recommend SB to anyone looking for a long term plan for being healthy. Besides the weight loss & increased energy, I've noticed my skin is healthier (people think I'm 28-29, but I'm 36) and (cover kids eyes) an increased sex drive :) Who can argue with a eating style that gives you all that?!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a must-have for that shedding that... I am not a yo-yo dieter and never have been. Yet despite regular exercise and what I thought was a pretty healthy diet, I've been carrying an extra 10 to 15lbs for the last 5 years. The South Beach Diet was so simple to follow, and helped me shed half of that annoying fat in the first 2 weeks! I felt really energetic and stopped getting the mid-afternoon "droopies." It also helped me become more aware of how different my body can feel when I eat healthy vs. "bad" carbs - and to understand how it affects my blood sugar and insulin levels. This book provides guidelines for healthy eating that most people can follow for a lifetime! My husband is impressed enough with my results that he actually agreed to give this diet a try. That means even more to me than my own success on this eating plan!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lifestyle change for the better My mother, who was referred by my aunt and cousin, referred me to this book. I have to admit I don't believe in diets. I've seen far to many people use 'magic' pills and go on fad diets only to see their hopes shattered when they are done. They failed to realise that they need a change of lifestyle, not a quick fix. This book teaches a lifestyle for those who are serious about changing their poor dietary habits. The diet is divided into three levels. The first one gets rid of your cravings (believe it or not it works... you'll never look at that cake or KFC the same again). The second level slowly introduces carbs back in and the third level is a regular healthy diet that you can live your life on. This book is also great for diabetics because it eliminates those sugar cravings and creates a balanced diet for them. This book also carries wisdom. It says if you cannot give up that bowl of ice cream then don't, but slowly cut the portions of it. Many of us look to food for comfort and telling yourself, strictly, No! to your treat, can end a diet before it begins. Overall, I seriously felt good on this diet. I looked better, I felt better, and my cravings were gone. When my mother went on it, she looked more radiant than I've seen her in years! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about losing weight!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works and tastes good too. I was skeptical at first as with any diet you always dread the sacrifice This diet however is great. The food tastes good it makes you feel good and you lose weight. Now you have to like vegatables that is a must and you have to invest time into preparing some of the dishes but it is well worth the effort. I lost 5 lbs in the first week and half. Give it a try you only have weight to lose.
