Karen Armstrong begins this spellbinding story of her spiritual journey with her departure in 1969 from the Roman Catholic convent she had entered seven years before -- hoping, but ultimately failing, to find God. She knew almost nothing of the changed world to which she was returning, and she was tormented by panic attacks and inexplicable seizures.

Armstrong's struggle against despair was further fueled by a string of discouragements -- failed spirituality, doctorate, and jobs; fruitless dealings with psychiatrists. Finally, in 1976, she was diagnosed with epilepsy, given proper treatment, and released from her "private hell." She then began the writing career that would become her true calling, and as she focused on the sacred texts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, her own inner story began to emerge. Without realizing it, she had embarked on a spiritual quest, and through it she would eventually experience moments of transcendence -- the profound fulfillment that she had not found in long hours of prayer as a young nun.

Powerfully engaging, often heartbreaking, but lit with bursts of humor, The Spiral Staircase is an extraordinary history of self.

Karen Armstrong, author, scholar, and journalist, is among the world's foremost commentators on religious history and culture. Her books include the bestselling A History of God and The Battle for God, as well as Buddha and Islam: A Short History.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spiral Staircase Provides Access to Religion I appreciated Armstrong's book, The Spiral Staircase. My Climb Out of Darkness. Indeed, she cleverly writes her book in such a way that it gives you the sense of going around and around, but with the accompanying feeling that you are progressing to somewhere. The book begins with a bleak darkness, but by the end, you realize you have been lead, slowly but surely, into light. Having a religious background, I found much of what she said understandable and compelling. I wondered if the book would have the same effect on people without any religious background. But after reading it, I'm sure that it is an extremely accessible account of one person's struggle to find her place in this world and in religion. I highly recommend this book for people who are looking for some kind of access into theological thinking, and for people who feel they need a gentle nudge out of their comfortable position.
