The old dance had been shut down for years. Their lives were tolerable, but they were scattered across the island. Jem had a chance to change things. To put things back the way they should be. The way they were supposed to be.

Jem tied Specter off to a mature cherry tree in the front yard. There wasn’t much to the little house. It was of gray stone with a timber roof that sagged just a bit. The small field that it sat in was neat, but looked several months behind on tending. He stepped onto the wooden stoop and raised his hand to knock. A loud groan came from behind the door.

The Standing Goat is a short story from the collection Tales from the Red Book of Tunes.
