A girl must join forces with rogue exorcists to save her sister and, ultimately, humanity, in the first in a must-read paranormal duology from New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent.
The Church is everywhere. It runs the city. It defends the populace from the demons beyond the wall. But what if it's the church that should be feared?
Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul—hers is a world where they’re in short supply—but only she can protect her younger sister, Mellie, and Mellie’s unborn child, a child that the Church believes shouldn’t exist.
There are only two options. Mellie can pledge her life—and her baby’s life—to the Church. Or she and Nina can go on the run. They choose the latter. Because it's kill or be killed. To save her sister, Nina will need to put her trust in Finn, a fugitive and rogue exorcist. What they’ll do together will change the face of the world.
Holy hellfire, indeed.

And don't miss the spellbinding sequel, The Flame Never Dies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing Holy cow! This story line takes zombies, demons, and the church to a whole new level. Nina and Mellie are a bit of a mess. They try to blend in the best they can so the church doesn't notice them and punish them for one of many many sins. These aren't your typical sins - we're talking about curiosity and asking questions being major sins. And the punishments aren't pleasant. But Mellie really messes up one day, and suddenly all eyes are on their family. Their family that is living in "sin". But that's not the only thing. Suddenly Nina is capable of doing strange things and demon-infested husks of people are trying to track her down. There definitely isn't a lack of action in this one. The church plays a super important role in this story - and it isn't a typical church. The church is the government and rule with a iron fist. there may be a group willing to help, but first Nina has to survive on the run from all the powers that be. One of the most unique world concepts I've seen in awhile. Pulling together a multitude of lore and weaving it seamlessly together to form something that you can't get enough of. There is a slight cliffhanger for an ending. Most of the ties are wrapped up, but there is one big one that will leave you hanging. *This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thrilling & Memorable As an ardent fangirl of Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series (Team Tod for afterlife!), I couldn't wait to read her latest YA novel. The Stars Never Rise introduces a terrifying world ruled by the powerful Unified Church and their army of exorcists. In the near-distant future, a war between humans and demons has decimated our population. Sins are now prosecuted as crimes, and harsh punishments are given to anyone who dares to defy the Church's mandates. Goodbye democracy. Goodbye free speech. The Unified Church controls everything. Nina Kane has lived her entire life in New Temperance, one of the few surviving cities scattered across America. Outside the protection of their walled city, there is only a barren wasteland and abandoned suburbs. Nina has always tried to keep her head down and out of trouble, but she's barely keeping it all together. Her mother's drug addiction has spiraled out of control. And Melanie, her younger sister, is pregnant—a sin the Church will not forgive, especially since souls are in short supply and reproduction is strictly regulated. Melanie may have been reckless and careless of the potential ramifications, but Nina is fiercely loyal and loves her sister. Somehow, someway, Nina is determined to protect Melanie and her unborn baby. But Nina's life continues to fall apart when she encounters a degenerate, a zombie-like monster that has been possessed by a demon. A mysterious, green-eyed boy named Finn saves her life, but she begins to learn the Church is hiding terrible secrets and they will kill anyone who tries to expose their lies. Nina has no choice but to trust Finn and his fugitive friends if she hopes to survive. Part dystopian, part urban fantasy, Rachel Vincent's The Stars Never Rise is an utterly thrilling and memorable read. A lot of essential information is dropped in the first half of the novel to really immerse readers in this brutal, slightly futuristic world before the pacing turns to full throttle in the second half. Nina has all the classic characteristics of a Rachel Vincent heroine: she's headstrong, pure of heart, and courageous in the face of danger, even if she's trembling with fear inside. I'm definitely excited to read the sequel, The Flame Never Dies, next year!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Addicting Rachel Vincent Thrill Ride I received this book as an ARC from Rachel Vincent herself, and I have to say it did not let me down! Although, I am quite furious that I have to wait probably two years to get a sequel! This novel was so amazing waiting for a sequel will be such a pain! This novel was yet again another charm by Rachel Vincent. The novel follows Nina Kane in a dystopian universe where soul sucking demons live, and there are few souls to go around! When her younger sister Melanie gets in a bit of trouble, Nina has to try to solve their problems while their alcohol binging Mother is always being a pain for Nina. Along the way, Nina meets a handsome stranger who might know more about Nina than she realizes, and he's pretty hot! When someone in Nina's crew is sinning and gets caught, all things break loose... The novel was very fast paced, and does not let the reader down. Each chapter has it's own little adventure and makes the book very addicting. This book is not a stand alone novel, and leaves itself on a bit of a cliffhanger that made me insanely frustrated because I have to wait for the next book! So be prepared to become insanely addicted and yearn for the next book. The characters were well developed and all had very interesting personalities. The plot was well thought out, and very original! Rachel Vincent has a magnificent set of ideas in that brain of hers! There wasn't much wrong with the novel. I felt like it was the perfect length, and ended in a way that makes more books possible, although it would be a horrible stand alone novel with how it ends. Overall, I really liked it! I couldn't put it down! Rachel Vincent did not let me down with this book. I had very high expectations and she surpassed them! Five out of five stars! Be aware, my novel was an Advanced Reader's Copy, so something could change by the time the real book comes out in June (I got mine in February). But it was still excellent either way!
