A. J. Fikry's life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island. Even the books in his store have become only a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly. And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is about love, learning, trials, and tribulations. A.J Fikry was a wonderful character I really enjoyed watching him grow and learn as a person through out the story. I think Maya was my favorite character, having children of my own she definitely held a special place in my heart. Her personality and actions was so true to how real and honest kids can be and how they see the world in ways I wish I could see it again. All the characters brought something to the story and I think this is the first book I have read in a while where there wasn't one I disliked or was annoyed by. This book is about love, learning, trials and tribulations. I am a big believer in everything happens for a reason and this book shows what good things can come out bad situations. It just gives me that warm cozy feeling, and I plan on purchasing this book and re-reading it time and time again. This is my first Gabrielle Zevin novel, I do own Elsewhere by her but have not yet read it. I loved her writing style it was so easy to enjoy and read I flew through this book in no time at all. She captivated me without me even knowing it. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that loves reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For readers and book lovers, a must read. “No Man is an Island; Every Book is a World” So reads the motto on the sign of Island Books. Owner A. J. Fikry, a recent widower, is the owner of Island Books on Alice Island. Slow sales, few friends and grief are taking a toll on A. J.’s enjoyment of life and love of books. After the theft of one of his prized possessions and a mysterious appearance of a small but important gift, A. J.’s life begins to change but not in a way that he would ever have expected.  Each chapter begins with a reference to a short story and becomes a sort of love letter to his daughter, Maya. We see how books, reading them and writing them can change your life and transform what you expect the future has in store for you.
