about

Award-winning author and illustrator Barbara Reid incorporates found objects into her acclaimed Plasticine art to create a glorious underground adventure featuring a little mouse on a big adventure.

Nib lives deep beneath the city, in a subway station the mice call Sweetfall. By day, the trains thunder past. At night, the old mice tell stories of the mythical land known as Tunnel's End, where the air is sweet and the nests are soft, but where scary, mouse-eating monsters roam. One day, Nib sets out on a quest to find Tunnel's End. Along the way he faces danger, finds a friend . . . and discovers a place more wonderful than he ever dreamed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Subway Story Author Barbara Reid is a total rockstar! She is a prolific author/illustrator, creating all of her illustrations out of plasticine. She tirelessly gives of her time to visit schools and talk to children and teachers. She is also very active on social media, never failing to acknowledge anything sent by her many fans around the world. To top it all off, the York Region District School Board has honoured her by naming one of their newest schools Barbara Reid Public School! We are huge Barbara Reid fans. Our favourite of her stories is the story of Nib the mouse who lives deep down in the subway system. One day Nib decides he is going to set off on an adventure to discover Tunnel's End, a place he has only ever heard about in stories. Finding danger and a new friend along the way, Nib discovers a place even more delicious and succulent than the stories had ever described. The Subway Mouse has been honoured as a Blue Spruce nominee, a Governor General's Literary Award Finalist and a recipient of the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award. The story really has something for everyone: animal lovers, subway enthusiasts, artists, and adventurers. Barbara Reid puts so much detail into her plasticine art, using found objects as well, to fill out the scenes deep in the subway stations. I would always use her stories to inspire an art lesson using plasticine. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing adventure for a little mouse Famed Canadian author and illustrator Barbara Reid has created another wonderful book for children. Reid has won just about every Canadian award for children's authors or illustrators, and her unique plasticine illustrations are known and recognized the world over. In this story she not only uses her trademark images but incorporated found objects to enhance the images and tell the story. This story is of a mouse named Nib. He is fascinated with items he finds around the subway station he lives in. In his home of Sweetfall, there are legends of Tunnel's End. Nib is fascinated and captivated by these mouse myths. One day he is compelled to search for Tunnel's End and his and our adventure is just beginning. His quest leads him through other mouse towns in different stations, and he meets Lola who joins him on his journey. Pick up the book and follow Nib on his journey; it will be a fun and wild journey.
