The day John Tanner is thrown in jail on a phony drug charge, his sixteen year old daughter, Jennifer, becomes the third girl at the YoungStar agency to be murdered on the eve of her seventeenth birthday. She traditionally spent the eve of every birthday with her father. This time, however, he has been put out of the way.

Tanner is fired from his job as creative director for a large production company and blacklisted everywhere in Hollywood for the drug bust and his wife files for divorce. During his time in Hollywood, Tanner has written at least a hundred cop shows. Now, he uses every bit of information and creative skill in his arsenal to devise the perfect murder. He is going to deliver justice to the man he is convinced is responsible for his daughter’s death and for ruining his life.

Hidden on a hill overlooking the Malibu home of his quarry Tanner is an ounce of pressure away from pulling the trigger and sending his antagonist to hell when the man drops, a trickle of blood spilling down his cheek from a .22 caliber hole in his temple. Tanner checks his rifle. The cartridge is still in the chamber. It hasn’t been fired.
Fleeing the scene, Tanner is targeted by a hit and run driver and knocked into the canyon where he is left for dead. He is found and rescued by two knights of the road. One of them is convinced he is a hit man on the run. The other just wants to save him. He arrives home to find the police waiting for him. They have him on motive and opportunity but they have no real evidence.

Tanner is not only suspected of dealing a powerful new form of cocaine, the police are now out to prove him guilty of a murder he didn’t commit. Tanner sets out to learn why only girls from this one talent agency have been targeted for death on the eve of their seventeenth birthday, who is attempting to introduce this new designer drug to the street, and why someone wanted his antagonist dead as badly as he did.

As his investigation leads him closer to the killer, there are attempts on his life. Tanner allows everyone to believe the last attack has been successful. Aided by a drug lord whose business depends upon finding and stopping the person who planted this new drug on Tanner and with the help of the two homeless veterans who rescued him and have become his allies, Tanner goes under cover in a final attempt to find the answers that will lead him to the serial killer who murdered his daughter and clear his name.
