What do we already know about kids?

ALL kids are naturally curious.
ALL kids want attention.

When we make time to Show, Ask, or Teach kids something, we help kids in two very important ways:

-We help them grow smarter. Consequently, they will know more and want to know more.
-We give them our time and undivided attention. Consequently, they will grow appreciative and grateful for our efforts, and connect with us more as parents.

The Teachable Minuteraises one very important question in today’s fast-paced, technologically advanced world:

How can we strike a balance between engaging with devices and interacting with kids?

“As I considered the answer, I drew from my many years of experience as a mother of three children, experienced educator, and national literacy consultant. I’ve caught thousands, if not millions, of ‘teachable minutes’ with kids! What I know for sure is that when we make a conscious effort to capture ‘the teachable minute’ as often as possible, in a variety of settings, we help kids grow smarter and more appreciative.”
—from the bookThe Teachable Minute

The teachable minute is a golden opportunity to teach kids something, anywhere, FAST. It can be caught at any time, in common places where we all live and go. The teachable minute can appear in a car, at the mall, around the kitchen table, at the post office, in the yard, on a plane, in an elevator, at the beach, on the subway, in a rocking chair, at the park, in the bathtub, and anywhere else you can think of.

Dr. Connie Hebert is a nationally acclaimed teacher of teachers, author, motivational speaker, and mother. She wants all parents to experience the teachable minute—because when it’s gone, it’s gone. Catch it with your kids. The Teachable Minuteshows you how!

ATM MACHINE “My daughter wanted to go back to the amusement park and I told her we didn’t have any money to do that again so soon. She looked up at me and replied, “Well Dad, just go to the ATM. There’s lots of money in it!”Michael, Miami Beach, FL Younger Kids SHOW them things on the machine like the number key pad. Have them point to each key while saying each number aloud. Then have them point and say again, going backwards. Point to numbers on the screen and have them ‘point and say’ them with you. Count money together! ASK questions such as, “How do you think the money gets into the ATM machine? How many dollar bills have to come out of the machine for us to get five dollars?” “Can you show me the number 2 on the keypad?” “Can you show me where the money comes out?” TEACH them how to punch in deposit or withdrawal amounts as you press each key and count out loud together (example: to deposit $100.00, press the keypad while saying aloud, “ONE, ZERO, ZERO, DECIMAL POINT, ZERO ZERO”).

Editorial Reviews

"'Teachable minutes are treasures that last a lifetime—for both parent and child. Dr. Connie Hebert shows new parents the magic and sparkle of teaching in everyday places with the same creative zeal that makes her many books for school teachers wildly popular. She shows you how to pay attention, share, teach, and care. It’s all here—teachable minutes that you never thought of everywhere you go. Read this book and discover teachable minutes in a daily routine chock-full of fun and BE your child’s first and best teacher in 77 places you may never have thought of! I’ve watched Connie help teachers catch falling readers and writers for years showing them the way to improve student confidence and performance. Now she brings that same inspiration to parents as she encourages parents, especially new parents, to pick up her personal mantra: 'Keep doing great things for kids and literacy!'” -Dr. Richard Gentry
