about

Tiger has lost almost everything. Her village. Her community. Her father. But her brother Tarren, who has been kidnapped by the deadheads that razed her village, still lives. With only the loyal but enigmatic old man Sai to guide her into the nightmare-jungle that was once North America, Tiger must face her greatest fears in a race to save her brother before he is lobotomized, even while the world around her is bled dry by Those That Watch.

The Watchers are in the end-stages of stripping the planet of its mineral resources—but as Tiger travels deeper into the lush inner-band, she learns that a far more dangerous biological resource is being cultivated on her dying world for a war that defies human comprehension. The race to save her brother's life takes on a new dimension as she uncovers the truth about her family, the sly old man she travels with and the uncanny beings she meets on her journey.

Tiger must question the invisible threads that bind her to her world, her brother, and her hidden past—but she will also discover that she is tied to a frightening and perhaps inevitable future and that she may not control her destiny. She will come to know The Tethering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully compelling storytelling with rich, lyrical prose! Jeremy Strong has written a richly layered tale evocative of H.G. Well's The Time Machine and Ursula Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and yet completely original and compelling nevertheless. His prose is mature and lyrical, strangely familiar as it seems to echo the language of a beloved story that one has read, time and time again, yet, paradoxically, one is reading it for the very first time. This post-apocalyptic tale resonates on a primal level as the myth of the coming Starchild and the possible renewal of the world and unification of humanity percolates its way through the story. The true adventures begin with the journey of Tiger as she ventures beyond the Tar Garden with her loyal guide Sai in pursuit of deadly raiders who have taken prisoners from her village including her brother Tarren. As Tiger follows their path through the dangerous jungle, she encounters strange creatures who may be friends or hidden foes. Just as Tiger does not know who to trust, neither does the reader. Strong has created a version of the jungle that feels like a deadly, despoiled Eden after the Fall where wilderness has overtaken civilization and monstrous giants and twisted hybrids roam around freely. The first part of this trilogy ends on a provocative moment of revelation and potential betrayal that leaves the reader in true suspense. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what truths are revealed and where Strong takes his characters in the second part of his trilogy.
