Customer Reviews of The Ultimate Mandolin Songbook: 26 Favorite Songs Arranged by Janet Davis

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Different but really cool arrangements and songs The style is to have two main variations of the same piece, a more straightforward one, followed by several pages of variations/licks to be used, and then a variation with more embellishments followed by several more pages of variations on almost every bar of the two main variations. I loved the two main variations, and the little lick embellishments for various segments are great. If you want to really learn the music so you can play by improvization/memory this book is wonderful. Unless you memorize these licks however it is pretty hard to put them into the song -- one would have to rewrite the music. The tab structure and notes is really clear. Book doesn't stay open easily, but otherwise print is clear, everything is great. The mandolin arrangements really take advantage of mandolin -- excellent fingering, great use of trills, slides, hammer ons, pull offs, double strikes (playing same note on two different strings). I've also been playing the pieces on guitar, of course the tabs are not helpful then, but notes mostly work. Another big plus is that chord structure is marked on the music, so you can play the guitar, or piano chording, and it great way to learn some new setups for mandolin chords too. I've learned some interesting new mandolin chord formations -- have greater appreciation for possibilities on mandolin chord fingering.
