about

Tess has always been tormented by waking visions that make her question her sanity. When the orphanage she lives in burns down, she decides to face her fears and find out once and for all what is wrong with her. She believes the truth must lie with her parents, and so, armed with only an address and phone number, Tess travels to a crumbling mansion in rural Quebec, where she discovers evidence of mistreatment of mental patients. She also makes an unlikely ally and gradually unearths her family's sad history—and finally accepts the truth about her paranormal powers.

Part of the SECRETS—a series of seven linked novels that can be read in any order.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Unquiet Past (Secrets) by Kelley Armstrong I enjoyed this! Fairly classic Kelley Armstrong. It's part of one of those series a bunch of authors write books in, but it stood alone. At least, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. Did not feel like it was set in the 60's, but that didn't bother me.It was really awesome to read one of her books that is finally very Canadian centered rather than Americanized.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Unquiet Past, it lurks around every corner! Definitely an interesting read. 3 out of 5 stars, My first Kelley Armstrong book that is not a part of a series. This was really weird for me, and I was worried about how it was going to wrap up. It was a nice short read, and I liked that it was in Canada, especially since she is Canadian. I enjoyed also that it had historical elements ! Yay ! Also this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone...it's a multiple author series that all link together. I enjoyed this story but not enough to want to read the whole series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book I have read a lot of Kelley Armstrong novels. This one is my least favorite. While I still enjoyed this book I feel it wasn't up to her usual standards. I did enjoy how Canadian the book was. But it felt like there wasn't a whole lot of supernatural to this book as her other books normally have. I felt the ending was rushed and abrupt. Still a decent read. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun Read I really like this book, especially the mix of English and French. A wonderful exploration of Canada. This book is perfect for a light read, something fun to just scrape the surface of. Perhaps it's not the best novel to look deeply into, but as something to just look at and enjoy, it's amazing. Worth the read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great YA Read I am a huge Kelly Armstrong fan! As a young adult, I read her adult series before her YA novels and unfortunately, I think this biased my perception of her writing. This is a YA novel that deals with some heavy topics. Racism, Depression, Abuse of Authority and a dash of Sex Slavery. You know, just a light read! To Armstrong's credit these topics are treated with respect and are used for more than just their buzzword value. A mark in the novel's favor in my books. Additionally, the novel is set in Ontario and Quebec and features a leading character of Cree and Metis background. Phenomenal! However, where the novel is lacking for me, is in the actual secret and corresponding mystery. I felt like I had read the scenario multiple times. Unfortunately, the 1960's setting only added to this lack in my opinion. I enjoyed this as a quick read, and am no encouraged to continue with Armstrong's adult fiction instead. Recommended for those looking for a light read (that still has some depth) and tales about orphans finding out where they come from.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unexpected RATING: 4 I read this at school for Red Maple, and while it was a bit predictable at first, and Tess seemed really stupid, I actually really enjoyed the suspense and Mystery of figuring out her past. I was surprised, I thought that I'd hate it, but I actually like it. I ALSO AM A HARDCORE SHIPPER OF THE SHIP.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Bad This was not my favourite book by Kelley Armstrong, but that said it was still reasonably good. I found it a little harder to get into and not as compelling as most by her but it was still an interesting read and a good book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it My complaint is that sometimes it could be hard to tell when the story was set. The speech patterns felt too modern. It's a typical Kelley Armstrong book and I mean that in the best of ways. It was a little spooky and had a bad ass heroine. It's not something I get tired of because the girls are real in their strength. Some are physically tougher, some are mentally stronger, some just won't let other push them around. Not everything is spelled out at the end. What disappointed me a bit was she didn't have as many clues throughout the book but it's also a very short book. It was well written and interesting. I stopped reading because I couldn't keep my eyes open and really needed sleep, otherwise I would've finished it in one go.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not her best I really hated to say that this was not her best book. I have most of Kelley's book and felt this one was not great. It just didn't grab me like everything else. I guess there always has to one you didn't like. Other than that...if you can ever go to a book signing and meet her she real nice and down to earth. Good reading!!!
