Rated 5 out of 5 by from The glitter and the gold What's in a name? Plenty-when its a name like Vanderbilt. Jerry E. Patterson's book, The Vanderbilts, covers in remarakble detail the dazzeling and sometimes dark history of one of the most extraordinary American families of all time. From their humble beginnings as impoverished immigrants to their unchallenged reign as leaders of gilded age society, Patterson describes their story with great intricacy, lavishly using historical photographs and artwork throughout the book. The Vanderbilts will astonish you as it provides a tour of the multi-million dollar townhouses the family commissioned on New York City's Fifth Avenue and the palatial summer "cottages" they subsequently created in Newport. The only thing more spectacular than these homes were the way their owners entertained in them. Patterson's book is a must have for anyone interested in historic architecture, the gilded age, or American history.
