about

It was an unforgettable summer....

When fourteen-year-old Irene Sauvelle moves with her family to Cape House on the coast of Normandy, she's immediately taken by the beauty of the place--its expansive cliffs, coasts, and harbors. There, she meets a local boy named Ishmael, and the two soon fall in love. But a dark mystery is about to unfold, involving a reclusive toymaker who lives in a gigantic mansion filled with mechanical beings and shadows of the past.

As strange lights shine through the fog surrounding a small, barren island, Irene's younger brother dreams of a dark creature hidden deep in the forest. And when a young girl is found murdered, her body at the end of a path torn through the woods by a monstrous, inhuman force, Irene and Ishmael wonder--has a demonic presence been unleashed on the inhabitants of Cape House? Together, they'll have to survive the most terrifying summer of their lives, as they try to piece together the many mysteries and secrets hidden in a town torn apart by tragedy, amidst a labyrinth of lights and shadows.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, decent YA read I love Carlos Zafon, and all of his adult novels. They are incredibly well-written, engaging, and deeply moving. His YA novels are no different! I read Marina first (disclaimer that I am safely out of the YA range these days) and it was incredible! So spooky... I mean definitely intended for a younger audience but no less engaging. Watcher in the Shadows was also excellent, great, spooky story, utterly Gothic as he is inclined to do. I tried to imagine as I was reading this what 12 year old me would have thought, and I probably would have loved it. I still enjoyed it, but the story was a tad more juvenile than Marina was so I got a little... meh... at times with it. But still, a good fun read for the summer. Briefly--Watcher in the Shadows follows Irene and her family as they move to a beautiful coastal town in France following the death of her father. There, her mother is employed by the mysterious toy/robot maker who lives in an equally mysterious castle in the forest. After the death of a young housekeeper (sinister doings), Irene teams up with the young girl's handsome cousin, Ismael, to solve this secret that has had the island in its grip for decades. But what does the toymaker have to do with it? And who is that person behind the shadow each night at a window in the forbidden west wing? Hmm... Anyway, gorgeous read for any YA enthusiast or person of that age, and it was fun to indulge that younger side of me for nostalgia's sake.
