The Well-Trained Mind will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school—one that will train him or her to read, to think, to ?understand?, to be well-rounded and curious about learning. Veteran home educators Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer outline the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child's mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school "grammar stage," the middle school "logic stage," and the high school "rhetoric stage." Using this theory as your model, you'll be able to instruct your child in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects.

This newly revised edition contains completely updated ordering information for all curricula and books, new and expanded curricula recommendations, new material on using computers and distance-learning resources, answers to common questions about home education, information about educational support groups, and advice on practical matters such as working with your local school board, preparing a high school transcript, and applying to colleges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great road-map for homeschooling This volume takes you through all the basics of putting a good-quality classical homeschooling curriculum together. It's full of reading lists, ideas on how to organize the content of your children's schooling, and even outlines how to arrange it all in notebooks/daily schedules etc. Read this book and then adapt it to your own needs. For example, kids learn to read at different rates - and so the reading material you choose for your own kids will need to be adapted for them. And you'll probably want to reduce the US history and geography and increase the Canadian content. Kids that follow a classical curriculum end up on AVERAGE 2 years ahead of their schooled peers. This book should show you why. I've been homeschooling, using this approach, for 8 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for homeschoolers! We had to extract our 2 youngest from a nasty situation in their school. We started homeschooling. I was so lost! I know I had to register with a board, but beyond that...where to go? Homeschool has many many philosophies, I had to find out where to fit in. I don't fit into 'unschooling' I know my kids, we'd learn nothing, not Waldorf, not Charlotte Mason. I felt it was school at home, and I didn't want to do that. A fellow homeschooler recommended this book to me. I signed it out of the library. It is Classical Education, it is based on the Trivium, 3 stages of learning, grammar, logic and rhetoric And it suits us soooo well. I have one in each of the two stages. They are learning the same content in many subject. The youngest the basic facts, the older more in depth and a little theory to answer the why. Within a very short time, my kids were learning and learning WELL. We are still babies in terms of homeschooling, but in the short time the kids have been home, they have learned so much, covered things that should have been but never were in the school system. Well Trained Minds even has lists of quality curricula , books and resources. A must read for homeschoolers. They authors also have a forum. lots of fantastic support there!

An excellent resource for any family. — Educational Freedom Press[Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer] are thorough and pragmatic, offering a detailed curriculum for kindergarten through grade 12, as well as opinions on everything from Latin (an indispensable language) to the Internet ('a mixed blessing'). — The New YorkerAn A for Home Schooling... a remarkable compendium of information designed to help home-schooling parents give their children a traditional liberal education. — City JournalThis book would be entertaining simply as the story of how Jessie, then a schoolteacher, decided to teach Susan, who now teaches literature at the College of William & Mary, at home.... But it's so much more than a good yarn. It's a mind-stretching tome. — Robert Holland (Richmond Times Dispatch)Has caused a revolution within the homeschool community. — The Old Schoolhouse MagazineHomeschooling parents on a mission to find the ultimate resource—or parents of traditionally-schooled children interested in an excellent supplement—are all well advised to peruse the pages of Wise and Wise Bauer's classy guide to classical education at home. — The Boox ReviewAn invaluable road map. — The Daily Democrat
