about

The inspiration for the critically acclaimed Starz miniseries The White Queen, #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory brings to life the extraordinary story of Elizabeth Woodville, a woman who rises from obscurity to become Queen of England, and changes the course of history forever.

Elizabeth Woodville is a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition. Her mother is Jacquetta, also known as the mystical lady of the rivers, and she is even more determined to bring power and wealth to the family line. While riding in the woods one day, Elizabeth captures the attentions of the newly crowned King Edward IV and, despite her common upbringing, marries him in secret.

When she is raised up to be his queen, the English court is outraged, but Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for her family’s dominance. Yet despite her best efforts, and even with the help of her mother’s powers, her two sons become pawns in a famous unsolved mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the lost princes in the Tower of London.

In this dazzling account of the deadly Wars of the Roses, brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize: the throne of England.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Book Ever I got this book 7 years ago only because I had store credit to Chapters/Indigo/Coles and there was limited selection in store but it was one of the best decisions of my life! I completely fell in love with this book and the characters and went on to purchase the whole series! It even compelled me to study in university the actual time period and events that occurred. I'm obsessed with this book and the series and Philippa Gregory is an amazing author.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this well past my bedtime I had a hard time putting this book down. Elizabeth is a wonderful narrator and she manages to add just enough expositional history to centre you in history without feeling like a history textbook - and by Elizabeth I of course mean Philippa Gregory. Great, easy reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent If you like The Red Queen you will like this novel as well. Lots of magic and witchcraft in this novel. If you are interested in the lost Princess in the Tower of London this novel touches on that. As I said in a previous review Phillipa Gregory is amazing at weaving historical fact with fiction together.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Good I finally finished! I feel like I was reading this book forever. 4.5 The writing, characters, and plot were all wonderful. I really enjoyed it as a whole, and I want to give it five stars, but for some reason I read this so incredibly slowly that I have to take off that half star. I would honestly read for a good hour and get through maybe 20 pages at a time. I was so weird. But other than that I loved it. I will continue on with the series and with more books from Phillipa Gregory in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The White Queen This is a wonderfully written fictional account of an actual time in history. The author is quick to point out that while it is fiction, it is based upon extensive research that she has done into a very interesting and tumultuous time in English history. I enjoyed the fact that the story was told from a female point of view. This point of view, as well as the historical accuracy that could be felt in the story, allowed me to be both entertained and educated at the same time. I was so taken with this book that I immediately began to read the White Princess once I had turned the last page. I'm now considering which Philippa Gregory book I will read next. I highly recommend this author and this book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The White Queen You can't help but stay up all night enjoying this book! A young widow falls in love with a future king of England, and the deceits, betrayals, affairs, and murders start from there. Wonderfully written with the history entwined in a manner that makes you want to research back to those times on your own to find out more: I wonder why my history classes weren't this enjoyable back in school (lol)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The White Queen Once again we are shown intrigue, willfulness, and fickleness as the way to navigate within a monarchy. A fun mix of fantasy and reality!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The White Queen I have just completed The White Queen and found it to be a very compelling read. The author kept to historical fact to the extent that she was able to determine it with some fictional elements to fill some of the blanks. Written from the perspective of the Queen, it was not only a very interesting story, but also a pretty good history lesson - a look into the period.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The White Queen Great historical romance! The main love story has great chemistry, and you get caught up in the history of the times. Highly recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The White Queen I watched the tv series and loved it, so thought i would read the book. I have not quite finished it yet, but i have to say, i prefer the tv series, not becase its easier to watch, but i think it disguises what is essentially a bit of a poorly written book. The series is so exciting and good, and normally when a film - series is good, the book is even better. However, the book is written in such simple prose, and some words and phrases used, (for example, "d'you think we will get through this alright?") are not what I expected coming from a queen of england in the 15th Century. Aside from some of the writing, it is essentially a good story taken from a period of history which for some reason is not well known, it was an interesting time for england and thats why it is an interesting book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The White Queen Philippa Gregory is a phenomenal writer and The White Queen is another testament to her talent! I would highly suggest this book and the others in The Cousins' War Series. This book was hard to put down (along with all of the other books by Philippa Gregory that I have read). She has a way with her writing that enthrals the reader. If you like historical fiction then you will absolutely love this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The White Queen Philippa Gregory is my #1 author. I love all of her novels. She pulls me into her stories and makes me feel like I am there. The novel is intense and makes you keep reading it. It takes you from fear to tears, from happiness to sadness. It's an emotional roller coaster. A must read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The White Queen I thought this was a very great book! I loved it:)
Date published: 2014-01-23
Rated 2 out of 5 by from The White Queen I read this book because I thought it might follow the same sort of time period as George R R Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series as it is believed to be loosely based off of the War of the Roses. I found I was slightly disappointed in the way it was written and the context. It seemed overly flowery for my taste. It's written in first person but also somehow in third person in some parts. I'm sure there is an audience for this but it really wasn't for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The White Queen I couldn't put it down. I love this genre and was engrossed from page one.

Editorial Reviews

“Wielding magic again in her latest War of the Roses novel … Gregory demonstrates the passion and skill that has made her the queen of English historical fiction.…Gregory portrays spirited women at odds with powerful men, endowing distant historical events with drama, and figures long dead or invented with real-life flaws and grand emotions. She makes history … come alive for readers.”
