about

This is the heart-rending story of a woman struggling to reclaim her dignity after a violent, abusive marriage and a worsening drink problem. Paula Spencer recalls her contented childhood, the audacity she learned as a teenager, the exhilaration of her romance with Charlo and the marriage to him that left her powerless. Capturing both her vulnerability and her strength, Doyle gives Paula a voice that is real and unforgettable.
Roddy Doyle was born in Dublin in 1958. He is the author of six acclaimed novels including the Booker Prize-winning Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, Realistic 3.5 stars Paula is an alcoholic widow with 4 kids; her husband used to beat her before she kicked him out a year before he died. We get to know the story of how she came to be where she is now. It was good. It went back and forth from "present" time to when she was younger, and I found her story interesting. Very realistic. One complaint for my edition, though (1998, Viking) - the number of editing errors! Whoa! There were lots of periods in the middle of sentences and plenty of typos to go along with it. I'm sure I would have rated the book the same, but it was somewhat distracting at times.

Editorial Reviews

“Roddy Doyle’s unsparing examination of a brutal marriage transcends the boundaries of class and nationhood.”
The Times

“Paula Spencer may be Doyle’s most successful literary creation yet, a tour de force of literary ventriloquism that gives the lie to the old writing workshop canard that a man can’t write from the point of view of a woman, let alone in her voice.”
Washington Post
