Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real tear jerker! Written from the perspective of a parent, this book features images young boys and girls embodying qualities that the speaker hopes his or her son or daughter will have, such as: wisdom, bravery, and compassion. Featuring images of children playing instruments, directing and acting in a play, and tending to a garden, to name a few scenarios, Martin’s story suggests that children can and should be whomever they desire as long as they take care of the earth and the people living on it. This book would appeal to young children, ages two to five due to its simplistic language and storyline. Its images, often in pastel colours and set against a light blue backdrop, convey a sense of gentleness and safety. Though the children are permitted to freely pursue whatever passion it is that they have, they do so within the confines of the parents’ protection. The children pretend to be superheroes, but they do so at home in their pyjamas. They play instruments in their own band, but they perform on the driveway with their baby sister on the drums. They act as doctors and nurses, but it is to small dolls and stuffed animals that they administer care. Always within arms’ reach of their parents, the children engage in leisure pursuit of whatever it is that pleases them, knowing that they have their parents’ support and protection. Heart-warming, engaging, and utterly whimsical, this beautifully illustrated book is sure to please parent and child alike.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sweet book for gifts! Emily Winfield Martin's books are all wonderfully illustrated, with cute rhymes that all follow the same scheme. There are a couple parts of this book where it breaks the mould she normally follows and something about it just feels a bit too long/out-of-place.

Editorial Reviews

“Her children are so serious… and so unflappable… that they convey not just hope for the future, but a sense of manifest destiny.” — Publishers Weekly starred review

“Sweet but not saccharine and singsong but not forced, Martin's text is one that will invite rereadings as it affirms parental wishes for children while admirably keeping child readers at its heart.”
