about

Twenty years ago, four teenagers at summer camp walked into the woods at night. Two were found murdered, and the others were never seen again. Four families had their lives changed forever. Now, two decades later, they are about to change again.

For Paul Copeland, the county prosecutor of Essex, New Jersey, mourning the loss of his sister has only recently begun to subside. Cope, as he is known, is now dealing with raising his six-year-old daughter as a single father after his wife has died of cancer. Balancing family life and a rapidly ascending career as a prosecutor distracts him from his past traumas, but only for so long. When a homicide victim is found with evidence linking him to Cope, the well-buried secrets of the prosecutor's family are threatened.

Is this homicide victim one of the campers who disappeared with his sister? Could his sister be alive? Cope has to confront so much he left behind that summer twenty years ago: his first love, Lucy; his mother, who abandoned the family; and the secrets that his Russian parents might have been hiding even from their own children. Cope must decide what is better left hidden in the dark and what truths can be brought to the light.

Harlan Coben is the bestselling author of eighteen novels, including The Woods, Promise Me, and The Innocent, and is the winner of the Edgar, Shamus, and Anthony awards. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! A real Page Turner!!! I can't say enough about this book...it had me from page one, I had to know what happened in those woods 20 years ago. Paul Copeland is about to go digging into the past, to the night his sister died in the woods and was never seen again. What he uncovers is unsettling and amazing in the way how one night affected so many lives. Harlan Coben takes you on an incredible journey to find the truth and when you reach the end, you are left to ponder the conclusion. It sits with you for awhile. Wow! Highly recommended, you will not be disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glued It's been a long time since I stayed up really late to read a good book. Had a hard time putting it down. This is the first book I've read by Harlan Coben and plan to look up his other titles. It kept me guessing until the very end. I enjoyed all the different branches of his storyline. Great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An unexpected Surprise It's not often that I can't put down a book. This was one that I had to go out and buy a copy for my husband to read; after having returned my copy to the library (sorry Chapters - I still use the library). It's a page turner and has unexpected surprises. Well worth reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent!!! I picked up this book completely by accident as something to read while on vacation. I couldn't put it down. The plot(s) and twists and turns were compelling. Coben also puts in some very humourous zingers along the way. Great writer. I will definitely check out his other efforts.
