about

“More than a whiff of The Lovely Bones wafts through this haunting domestic noir from bestseller Jewell…Skillfully told by several narrators (some of them ghostly), Jewell’s gripping novel is an emotionally resonant story of loss, grief, and renewal.” —Publishers Weekly

Ten years after her teenage daughter goes missing, a woman connects with a charming single father, but she is still haunted by her child’s disappearance in this “deeply emotional and incredibly clever” (Mail Online) thriller from the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of I Found You.

Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.

And then she was gone.

Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?
Lisa Jewell was born and raised in north London, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. She is the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA TODAY bestselling author of over fifteen novels, including Then She Was Gone, I Found You, The Girls in the Garden, and The House We Grew Up In. Rated 3 out of 5 by from A page turner to be sure This book had be reading into the wee hours of the morning with spine tingling moments, however I found the motive behind the kidnapping and eventual fate of the those specific characters hard to believe. Moreover, the story fizzled out at the end and instead of any type of confrontation, which was required with such high emotions, it seemed as those everyone accepted their fates and went peacefully into their happily ever after. Still the character development of those left behind was surprisingly honest and compelling. A scrumptious and quick read for those looking for something to fill the time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Then I was done! The novel started a bit slow at first, but the suspense slowly built up and I found myself flipping through the chapters in lightning speed. I would categorize this story as more of a tragedy rather than a thriller, but it is definitely a page-turner worth reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such an amazing book! I've always loved reading but i stopped reading for a little while because i had a hard time finding the time. This was the first book i bought to try to get myself back into reading and let me tell you, it did the job. I cannot even put into words how amazing this book was. I read it in two days because i just couldn't put it down, and i found myself staying up late and waking up early because i was just too excited to read. To me, that's the meaning of an amazing book. You feel connected to the characters in just an incredible way. You feel their heartbreaks and their happiness deep in your soul. Please pick up a copy when you have the chance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down! This was my first Jewell novel and will definitely read more. This novel is a real page-turner. It's a psychological triller that keeps you up at night. A little too dark for my usual taste, but really enjoyed it anyway!
Date published: 2018-11-10
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Twisted, Dark - keeps you reading . This is a different kind of book that i have been reading lately. I still enjoyed this though! Little bit "darker" in a sense and some pretty unfortunate things happen to his girl but i could not put it down until i found out what happens to her ...... and... well that is for you to find out!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So depressing This book is so over-rated. It was twisted and depressing. I actually found it rather sickening and disturbing too. It left me in a funk for a couple days after I completed reading it. I've read better psychological thrillers than this. I'm sorry but I wouldn't recommend this book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good read! Overall, it was a great book! The only negative thing I have to say is that it was a little predictable. I was hoping that there would be a few twists to throw me off, but it was fairly obvious with what was going on. Still a great read, though!
Date published: 2018-08-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best this year This held my attention from the brief story on the outside cover. The plot twists were wonderfully crafted, and at each and every turn I found myself saying "Oh.....OH! I didn't see THIS coming!" The characters drew you in and occasionally gave you gasp. It was wonderful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved This!! New Favourite Author!!! This is the first Lisa Jewell book I have read and I WANT MORE!! I will definitely be picking up more/all of her other books! This book is full of details and has a lot going on, but is not hard to follow or keep up with at all. Lisa's writing is so "real" seeming that I found I wanted to google the characters names to see what they looked like/find out more because it felt like a true crime!
Date published: 2018-08-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My! My! My! This was such a good book!!! My! My! My! This was such a good book!!! At first, I was worried I would not be able to read it because "losing a child" stories always get me to the heart and I find them hard to read. The story broke my heart, but if I did not persevere, I would have missed out on a well written and complex story with so many twists and turns. Lisa Jewell's writing is fantastic and the story is well structured and keeps you on your toes. I totally recommend this book.
Date published: 2018-08-24
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Was expecting better I've read several of Jewell's books and was pretty excited for this one to come out. However, I have to admit, it wasn't as good as I was expecting. It was still somewhat suspenseful, but not her best work.
Date published: 2018-08-24

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! Did this book live up to the hype for me!? The answer is YES! This book was a real page turner, I stayed up way past my bedtime cause I needed to know what happened to Ellie Mack. If you’re looking for a thriller with a big twist at the end then this isn’t the book for you, instead this one built up slowly so you can piece together the story while you read. I even teared up at the end which I was not expecting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Lisa Jewell Book This is my first Lisa Jewell book. She is a good writer and keeps you (as the reader) engaged. I read the book in one go. Even though I had guessed what happened, I really still wanted the story to unfold. I especially liked the perspectives from all the various characters. More multi-dimensional and interesting to the reader.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! MUST READ! This novel was captivating from start to finish. I could not put this book down because I simply wanted to know what happened to Ellie. As the other reviews have mentioned, the family dynamics and plot lines keep you glued to the book. Brilliant storytelling by the author! I will definitely be checking out her other books!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down! I was hooked right from the beginning. Ellie’s disappearance was so mysterious. Even though we get a hint of who was involved in her disappearance early on in the book, the details of what happened are saved until the end. I didn’t want to stop reading because I really wanted to find out what happened to her! I found Floyd so creepy right from the moment he was introduced. He was a little too good to be true. He seemed like the perfect guy for Laurel, which was too convenient. His daughter was a little odd too. Poppy is very mature for her age and she looks just like Laurel’s daughter. Their appearance in Laurel’s life was suspicious. Though the novel was very suspenseful, the ending was so emotional that it made me cry. If you’re looking for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, go read this book! I received a copy of this book from the publisher on NetGalley.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow in the beginning, but still an amazing thriller This may contradict what I said in my title, but I have to take into consideration that I have not read thrillers like this in a while and that the pacing in the beginning covers more of background knowledge I should be aware of. All I thought of in my head was "What happened to Ellie? What happened to Ellie? What happened to Ellie?" and that was prob the reason why I skimmed through a few pages (my fault lol) Overall, a wonderful read and well written! This book hand me on my toes, nevertheless (i'll get used to stories like these eventually)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Thriller Book This was my first thriller book and it was a page turner! I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It executes different perspectives very well, it made sense. I had my assumption of what the plot couldve been but it was a bit of a twist! I enjoyed how fleshed out the characters were. They had their flaws, they were very human.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING Book I will cut right to the chase: this book was simply AMAZING, do yourself and your bookshelf a favour and go buy yourself a copy ASAP! This is the second book I have read by Lisa Jewell (the first was The Girls in the Garden - which I also loved) and I must say that she has become one of my favorite authors. This book was a compelling mystery that was perfectly paced and so addictive - I devoured this book. The pace of the story as a whole added to the suspense for me, it was a quick read but also a slow burn, which avoided giving away too much too soon and instead allowed a strong build up to what turns out to be a great story. The book alternates between Then and Now and tells the story of a missing girl, Ellie, before, during and after her disappearance. Her mother, Laurel, the main character is the lead storyteller. You can't help but have your heart go out to Laurel and all that she's been through: losing a child, husband and the better version of what she used to be. She's forced to regain her life back, albeit hesitantly. The layers of mystery surrounding Ellie's disappearance slowly unfold through the varying perspectives of each character. Laurel finally gets some closure on Ellie's disappearance and starts to pick herself back up, slowly. Her rise to life again is briefly interrupted with an astonishing revelation. This book hits on many emotions and real life experiences within a family dynamic following the loss of a child, which I thought really allowed me to become attached to the characters. I didn't quite see some of the twists and turns coming, but wasn't too shocked at certain parts either. Overall, I thought the level of suspense was perfectly timed and unleashed. I highly recommend this book be added to suspense/thriller fiction fans reading list this summer as I am confident it won't disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Read! This book was very well written. I liked that it wasn't scary and easy to follow. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Predictable Lisa Jewell has the original ending of this novel somewhere on her website if you wanted to know what could have happened! I predicted almost everything about the novel. However, it was a great read because even if you guess the main plot points, you still have to read further to understand the motivation behind the characters. There was something at the end that I did not guess. Great read and psychotic characters!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this, can't wait for her next novel! Then she was Gone by Lisa Jewell is an absolutely fantastic wonder of a novel that I couldn't get enough of. I loved it from beginning to end. I was sure I knew what was going to happen, then something would change, and I would think, OK, now I know whats going to happen, and then it would change again, each time throwing me for a loop. One of the best stories I have read in years. I couldn't put it down. It is written in the first person from varying points of view and you can relate to so many of them. I could relate to the main character, Laurel, because she is a mom and I have two daughters. I have "golden" children that I don't know what I would do if either of them vanished. It spooked me and I had to stop and go give them both a hug while I was reading this. I kept wondering if the same thing ever happened to one of my children if I would push my other children and husband away. Every new turn I would ask myself, is this what I would do? It is a well written and engaging story that resonates long after you have put it down. Half way through you start to read in someone else's point of view, and I loved it. It changed up the novel without losing the feel of the story. "May was like the Friday night of summer: all the good times lying ahead of you, bright and shiny and waiting to be lived" Loved this, it is so true. Maybe a sign of what is to come? The ending was not what I was expecting at all with a hugely suspenseful buildup, and it wasn't until very close to the end that everything became clear and I can not give more detail than that because I would be giving too much of the story away. It is a real emotional story that I felt deep with in my soul. Can't wait to read more by Lisa Jewell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN YEARS This was the first Lisa Jewell book I have read, and boy did she not disappoint. I happened to pick it up off the shelf, knowing nothing about her or the book. This was suspensful and a true page turner. I finished it on the train to and from work, and late night in bed, in 3 days. I thought about it when I wasn't reading, and could not put it down when I was. The best book I have read in many, many years. I am currently on my third book of hers, and the others, too, do not disappoint. However, Then She Was Gone is amazing beyond belief, and no book compares.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from One among many A very easy and warm read. Although the book was mostly predictably, You would want to read to the end (well if you are like me). The characters were interesting and fun.The descriptions allowed my imaginations to blossom. The story embodies family, tragedy, love, lost and what comes after. Filled with cliches and a beautiful ending, I will still recommend this book for a warm, lazy beach day. I wanted more out of the story as I read it, something exciting. I wanted suspense, thrilling finds and more drama but I think I will settle for the heart warming, eye-tearing letter from Ellie at the end. Good job LJ.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This book was interesting.. It started off as a page turner, you are trying to figure out what happened and how everyone is connected, but then it got really creepy and then sad and heartbreaking especially the epilogue. It's well written (although parts of it of questionable) and a quick read. The only reason I won't recommend it is that it's not for everyone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Enough Read Well l didn't find to much of this book surprising,i still enjoyed it. I don't think it's a "thriller" more a murder mystery. I had a hard time with Laurel making it clear that Ellie was her "favorite" child all through the book. And she was pretty judgemental of Floyd and Poppy's father/daughter relationship. Heck she seemed judgemental of everyone. Then she wonders why her relationship with Hattie was so bad? The lasagna incident was pretty telling. But for me the epilogue was heartbreaking. This book wasn't bad but l don't know it could have been better

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it. Quick read. I loved this book, finished it in 2 days, I couldn't put it down. The story is great and even though by half of the book you kind of already know what happened, you just have to keep reading. The ending was not much of my liking because the story was detailed and extended and by the end it was like a paragraph for each issue, you know what I mean? very quick just like: "check, check, check and all is well". But still it was a great read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from psychological drama 5 star! Time well spent reading this masterfully written psychological drama. Told at a steady pace with surprises that feel like forgone conclusions. Laurel & Paul Mack and their three children, Jake, Hanna & Ellie glide through their normal middle'class lives until an unhinged tutor's stalking causes 15 year old Ellie to disappear. Ten years later the shattered family begins to change when Laurel meets Floyd Dunn and his 9 yr old daughter Poppy. There is something familiar calling to Laurel's heart. Chapters alternate between then and now; Ellie, and her family's struggle to cope and survive.

Read from the Book

PROLOGUE  Those months, the months before she disappeared, were the best months. Really. Just the best. Every moment presented itself to her like a gift and said, Here I am, another perfect moment, just look at me, can you believe how lovely I am? Every morning was a flurry of mascara and butterflies, quickening pulse as she neared the school gates, blooming joy as her eyes found him. School was no longer a cage; it was the bustling, spotlit film set for her love story. Ellie Mack could not believe that Theo Goodman had wanted to go out with her. Theo Goodman was the best-looking boy in year eleven, bar none. He’d also been the best-looking boy in year ten, year nine, and year eight. Not year seven though. None of the boys in year seven were good-looking. They were all tiny, bug-eyed babies in huge shoes and oversized blazers. Theo Goodman had never had a girlfriend and everyone thought maybe he was gay. He was kind of pretty, for a boy, and very thin. And just, basically, really, really nice. Ellie had dreamed about being with him for years, whether he was gay or not. She would have been happy just to have been his friend. His young, pretty mum walked to school with him every day. She wore gym gear and had her hair in a ponytail and usually had a small white dog with her that Theo would pick up and kiss on the cheek before placing it gently back down on the pavement; then he would kiss his mum and saunter through the gates. He didn’t care who saw. He wasn’t embarrassed by the powder-puff dog or his mum. He was self-assured.  Then one day last year, just after the summer holiday, he had struck up a conversation with her. Just like that. During lunch, something to do with some homework assignment or other, and Ellie, who really knew nothing much about anything, knew immediately that he wasn’t gay and that he was talking to her because he liked her. It was totally obvious. And then, just like that, they were boyfriend and girlfriend. She’d thought it would be more complicated.  But one wrong move, one tiny kink in the time line, it was all over. Not just their love story, but all of it. Youth. Life. Ellie Mack. All gone. All gone forever. If she could rewind the timeline, untwist it and roll it back the other way like a ball of wool, she’d see the knots in the yarn, the warning signs. Looking at it backward it was obvious all along. But back then, when she knew nothing about anything, she had not seen it coming. She had walked straight into it with her eyes open. 1   Laurel let herself into her daughter’s flat. It was, even on this relatively bright day, dark and gloomy. The window at the front was overwhelmed by a terrible tangle of wisteria while the other side of the flat was completely overshadowed by the small woodland it backed onto. An impulse buy, that’s what it had been. Hanna had just got her first bonus and wanted to throw it at something solid before it evaporated. The people she’d bought the flat from had filled it with beautiful things but Hanna never had the time to shop for furnishings and the flat now looked like a sad post divorce downsizer. The fact that she didn’t mind her mum coming in when she was out and cleaning it was proof that the flat was no more than a glorified hotel room to her. Laurel swept, by force of habit, down Hanna’s dingy hallway and straight to the kitchen, where she took the cleaning kit from under the sink. It looked as though Hanna hadn’t been home the night before. There was no cereal bowl in the sink, no milk splashes on the work surface, no tube of mascara left half-open by the magnifying makeup mirror on the windowsill. A plume of ice went down Laurel’s spine. Hanna always came home. Hanna had nowhere else to go. She went to her handbag and pulled out her phone, dialed Hanna’s number with shaking fingers, and fumbled when the call went through to voicemail as it always did when Hanna was at work. The phone fell from her hands and toward the floor where it caught the side of her shoe and didn’t break. “Shit,” she hissed to herself, picking up the phone and staring at it blindly. “Shit.” She had no one to call, no one to ask: Have you seen Hanna? Do you know where she is? Her life simply didn’t work like that. There were no connections anywhere. Just little islands of life dotted here and there. It was possible, she thought, that Hanna had met a man, but unlikely. Hanna hadn’t had a boyfriend, not one, ever. Someone had once mooted the theory that Hanna felt too guilty to have a boyfriend because her little sister would never have one. The same theory could also be applied to her miserable flat and nonexistent social life. Laurel knew simultaneously that she was overreacting and also that she was not overreacting. When you are the parent of a child who walked out of the house one morning with a rucksack full of books to study at a library a fifteen-minute walk away and then never came home again, then there is no such thing as overreacting. The fact that she was standing in her adult daughter’s kitchen picturing her dead in a ditch because she hadn’t left a cereal bowl in the sink was perfectly sane and reasonable in the context of her own experience. She typed the name of Hanna’s company into a search engine and pressed the link to the phone number. The switchboard put her through to Hanna’s extension and Laurel held her breath. “Hanna Mack speaking.” There it was, her daughter’s voice, brusque and characterless. Laurel didn’t say anything, just touched the off button on her screen and put her phone back into her bag. She opened Hanna’s dishwasher and began unstacking it.

Editorial Reviews

“Then She Was Gone is a riveting thriller.” —PopSugar “Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace, leaving readers on the edge of their seats. There will surely be comparisons to novels such as Emma Donoghue’s Room (2010) as well as all of the “Girl” thrillers, but Jewell’s latest really isn’t at all derivative. Her multilayered characters are sheer perfection, and even the most astute thriller reader won’t see where everything is going until the final threads are unknotted. Those few who do guess early won’t mind, as the pace and prose will keep them hooked.” —Booklist, starred review "Harrowing." —US Weekly “Jewell gets more riveting and twisty with every book she writes. Completely absorbing, fast-paced, well-written and with a shocking ending that will keep readers guessing, Then She Was Gone is a nearly pitch-perfect thriller. Fans of Gillian Flynn, Paula Hawkins and Ruth Ware are sure to adore this haunting novel.” —Shelf Awareness “More than a whiff of The Lovely Bones wafts through this haunting domestic noir from bestseller Jewell. . . Skillfully told by several narrators, Jewell’s gripping novel is an emotionally resonant story of loss, grief, and renewal.”  —Publishers Weekly "For thriller readers, Jewell's latest will not disappoint. Sharply written with twists and turns, it will please fans of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, or Luckiest Girl Alive." —Library Journal “In addition to being a complex and genuinely suspenseful narrative, Then She Was Gone is a rich study of the ways in which people respond to grief and how past trauma can continue to shape their decision-making and relationships years or decades later. Readers will be truly affected by Ellie’s real story once it’s revealed—and they’ll be satisfied by the hopeful yet bittersweet ending. Jewell demonstrates once again that she has what it takes to genuinely shock, surprise and move her readers.” —Book Reporter "What begins as a story about the mother of a missing girl starting a new relationship as she comes terms with her grief morphs into a gripping, disturbing and utterly fascinating tale about what really happened to young Ellie Mack. I've been a Lisa Jewell fan for a long time and in this book, as in all her others, she deftly weaves a compelling plot with an emotional depth that leaves you gasping. In Then She Was Gone she has created a book that is dark and claustrophobic but also heartfelt and moving. Then She Was Gone packs a huge emotional punch that will leave you winded. I loved it." —C.L. Taylor, bestselling author "If you were the first of your friends to read Girl On The Train, and have read Gone Girl more times than you can remember, then here is your summer read.
