We think we know cats. We don’t. We can only observe and try to understand what goes on behind the feline eyes that gaze at us ... with what? Love? Disdain? A simple request that the food arrive on time? “There Will Be Cats” doesn’t pretend to understand cats. It reflects how they appear to us: loving, warring, fickle, and apparently running the show.

Often funny, reflective on occasion, “There Will Be Cats” sometimes sees cats in a grumpy, puzzled way as in, “I Hate My Cat” and “Cats Do Not Repent” and “Grimalkin.” Cats can seem like mere background to our lives. Then circumstances bring us to the understanding they are much more as in, “Who but You?” and “The Day That Our Side Lost.”

This small book of 26 feline poems also includes one poem about dogs, though it’s really about cats, and one short story, “The Move”, also about cats.

However you see felines, “There Will Be Cats” reminds us that however the world changes, whatever the future may hold, no matter what happens in our lives, there will be cats.
