about

A new spine-tingling thriller from the bestselling master of edge-of-your-seat stories.

When Casey Duncan first arrived at Rockton, the off-the-grid, isolated community built as a haven for people running from their pasts, she had no idea what to expect. There are no cell phones, no internet, no mail and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. She certainly didn't expect to become the town homicide detective. But, the very last thing she expected was for the council to drop a dangerous criminal into their midst without a plan to keep him imprisoned. And she never thought that she'd have to be responsible for him.

The longer Oliver Brady stays in town, the more people seem to die around him. When evidence begins piling up that someone inside Rockton is working as his accomplice, Casey races to figure out who exactly Brady is and what crimes he's truly responsible for committing.

With dangerous secrets and heart-stopping twists, This Fallen Prey is Kelley Armstrong's most gripping thriller yet.
Kelley Armstrong is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Otherworld series, as well as the New York Times bestselling young adult trilogy Darkest Powers, the Darkness Rising trilogy, and the Nadia Stafford series. She lives in rural Ontario, Canada.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Intoxicating Thriller “The Fallen Prey” the third book in Kelley Armstrong’s series opens when the Council flies a serial killer into the hidden and remote community of Rockton, a refuge for criminals and victims running from their pasts. Ill-equipped to accommodate Oliver Brady for six months and dealing with mixed feelings in the town Detective Casey Duncan and Sheriff Eric Dalton struggle to keep him safe until a lynch mob, a fire and his poisoning threaten to take the problem out of their hands. Fast-paced and action-packed the plot heats up when Oliver escapes his confinement with a hostage and Casey and Eric set out to hunt him down only to duck a sniper’s bullets, encounter a hunting party from the First Settlement and savage hostiles as the bodies of murdered victims begin to mount. With multiple twists and turns as Oliver claims his innocence, Casey pursues a hunch about an accomplice in Rockton, and his stepfather shows up to join the search, intensity and suspense escalate. Well-written and intriguing Kelley Armstrong weaves a story where Casey and Eric can only rely on each other as everyone in Rockton hides secrets and no one can be trusted. Bringing this thrilling page-turner to life are unforgettable and complex characters like homicide detective Casey Duncan who’s a smart, resourceful overachiever and Sheriff Eric Dalton who seems harsh and tough but is loyal, trustworthy and dedicated to the town. It is their love affair and close professional relationship that often dilutes the dark edginess of the story. Yet its antagonists like spoiled, self-centered, All-American boy Oliver Brady; the charming, smooth-talking but deceptive Gregory Wallace, and the cold, heartless childlike Harper who add a terrifying and deadly chill. I thoroughly enjoyed “The Fallen Prey” with its mesmerizing plot and compelling characters and hope to see a 4th book in this series that will unravel more clues about the mysterious people of Rockton.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! This is the 3rd book of the town of Rockton. Take a town with no outside connections, no electricity, running water or anything that we take for granted, not even phones, or computers and internet connections, now send criminals with money to buy there way in to live and all are "welcome" murders, fraudsters, you name it. BUT now put a serial killer in their midst because "Step Dad" can pay a million dollars to do him this favor for only 6 months...what could go wrong? Fast paced, page turning and a lot of wow moments takes you on this journey with Eric and Casey as they try to come to terms with what they are handed and who they thought they could trust!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hidden town full of secrets.... It was -21°C (-6°F) the day I sat down to begin the This Fallen Prey, the third installment in Kelley Armstrong's City of the Lost Series. The cold and snow falling outside was the perfect setting to immerse myself in the Yukon town of Rockton. An off the grid town that doesn't exist on any map, where people go to disappear... Protagonist Casey Duncan is one of those who came to Rockton to hide. She's a former cop and is now the only detective on Rockton's small police force. Maintaining law and order in a town where everyone is hiding something isn't easy. And it's made even harder when 'the council' sends a serial killer to Rockton for the small force to imprison. I really enjoy this series. Why? Casey is a great protagonist - she's tough, smart and determined, but isn't perfect. The setting allows for a large cast of supporting characters. They're all just as interesting and fleshed out. The other lead is Sheriff Eric Dalton. He's the only resident actually born in the area. He's also Casey's love interest. I'm not a big romance reader, but Armstrong does it well. Their relationship is believable, not 'over the top' and enhances the book, rather than being the main focus. The mysteries are always intriguing and not easily figured out. The plot in This Fallen Prey was excellent. I honestly had no idea who was telling the truth and who was lying. There are a number of twists and turns that changed the direction of the investigation - and the final whodunit - which was a surprise to me. This Fallen Prey is action filled with danger always around the corner. (And on the next page. I admit it - I did flip ahead a few times....) "It's a puzzle of configuration, and each place in it has two sides - guilt or innocence - and the meaning changes depending on which side I place up....Two ways of looking at everything, leading to two ways of investigating." The premise of a hidden town full of residents with shady (to say the least) backgrounds is brilliant. It allows for so many avenues of possibilities. But not just in the town of Rockton. Outside of the town limits there exist others - a settlement, loners and those referred to as "Hostiles'. We've been given a closer look at these groups in This Fallen Prey, but there is more to discover. The case is solved by the final pages....but the door is open for more. More questions, more lies, more deceit and more cases to come. And this reader cannot wait. Write faster please Kelley!
