~Lambda Literary Award finalist for the best LGBT YA novel of 2018~

A fresh, charming rom-com perfect for fans of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Boy Meets Boy about Nathan Bird, who has sworn off happy endings but is sorely tested when his former best friend, Ollie, moves back to town.

Nathan Bird doesn’t believe in happy endings. Although he’s the ultimate film buff and an aspiring screenwriter, Nate’s seen the demise of too many relationships to believe that happy endings exist in real life.

Playing it safe to avoid a broken heart has been his MO ever since his father died and left his mom to unravel—but this strategy is not without fault. His best-friend-turned-girlfriend-turned-best-friend-again, Florence, is set on making sure Nate finds someone else. And in a twist that is rom-com-worthy, someone does come along: Oliver James Hernández, his childhood best friend.

After a painful mix-up when they were little, Nate finally has the chance to tell Ollie the truth about his feelings. But can Nate find the courage to pursue his own happily ever after?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone Should Read This How do I even begin to form words about this book? It's ridiculously cute, captures so much humanity in it, has a wonderful amount of representation and not to mention, is a teenage love story. (MY FAVOURITE!) The whole moral of this novel is simple - enjoy love with the people you love in the moment while you have it. Don't let harsh realities from pain of the past or potential broken hearts keep you from finding happiness. This book really hit home for me; from family relationships to romantic relationships, friendships and being in love as a teenager. It started as a cute read that I was sent in the mail and turned into one of my favourite books of all time. Everyone should read this. Love is love is love, no matter the age, orientation, gender or any other labels you can put on it. Love is love is love, and it is worth every moment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Review from This is the Story of My(Reading) Life 3.5* Super cute. Super diverse. A ton of queer rep. Deaf rep. Nate was loveable and frustrating all rolled into a ball. He kind of lets his friends walk all over him because he's afraid of hurting anyone's feelings(Flo can piss right the hell off. She fully takes advantage of him and his love for her the whole fucking book). He's also scared of heartbreak, so you know that can make him kind of an asshole towards Ollie. Ollie who is adorable Like I said cute, and I think fans of Simon will enjoy this one. But not my favourite thing ever.

“As an unapologetic fan of a great rom-com, This is Kind of an Epic Love Story gave me all I was looing for, including the one thing that’s challenging to find—a beautiful LGBTQ love story. Kheryn’s novel is hopeful, romantic, and everything my gay heart needed!”
