No one knows what happened that morning at River Point. Five boys went hunting. Four came back. The boys won't say who fired the shot that killed their friend, Grant; the evidence shows it could have been any one of them.
Kate Marino's senior year internship at the District Attorney's Office isn't exactly glamorous-more like an excuse to leave school early that looks good on college applications. Then the DA hands her boss, Mr. Stone, the biggest case her small town of Belle Terre has ever seen. The River Point Boys are all anyone can talk about. Despite their damning toxicology reports the morning of the accident, the DA wants the boys' case swept under the rug. He owes his political office to their powerful families.
Kate won't let that happen. Digging up secrets without revealing her own is a dangerous line to walk; Kate has personal reasons for seeking justice for Grant. As she investigates with Stone-the aging prosecutor relying on Kate to see and hear what he cannot-she realizes that nothing about the case-or the boys-is what it seems. Grant wasn't who she thought he was, and neither is Stone's prime suspect. As Kate gets dangerously close to the truth, it becomes clear that the early morning accident might not have been an accident at all-and if Kate doesn't uncover the true killer, more than one life could be on the line including her own.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from GOOD! This was a good book, fast-paced, and the mystery was complicated enough that you never truly figured it out until the end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Such a fun, fast-paced mystery! Loved reading from Kate's POV and the romance was super swoony. I'm only sad I read this so quickly because I really enjoyed myself and want more!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I'm not sure what to think On one hand, it was a good read, intriguing and a page turner down to the last chapter. On the other hand, there were a lot of unbelievable parts to this...I cannot fathom the idea of a high schooler getting as involved with a case as she did, seems pretty farfetched to me, and for none of the boys to have been freaking out any more than they were...I just don't think this is how people would react. Good plot, good read, but I had to suspend my belief slightly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well done! Where do I even start with this one? I didn't have super high expectations for this book, but I really should have because it was amazing! There were twists and turns for sure, but not where I was expecting, which just made everything even more surprising. The writing was great, the characters were great and the plot was amazing. My one wish is that the book could've delved a little deeper into the characters of the boys, but I understand that that would have changed the dynamic of Kate's story a little more seeing as it wouldn't be as centered on her, so I can't really complain about that one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart-Pounding YA Thriller "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32 KJV It's a tragic story that all too often makes headlines: some friends went into the woods to hunt, and one died from a fatal gunshot wound. Purely accidental. Mistaken for a deer, or some such. No one would ever suspect foul play; after all, these boys were friends. But sometimes friends turn on you, and leave you bleeding on the forest floor. I devoured this book in a matter of hours. And, in a roundabout way, I guess this book devoured me, too. Elston has just upped the game in YA fiction. Twisting, turning, dead-end slams that leave you dizzy and reeling, second-guessing, pointing fingers.... I couldn't get enough. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to suit my insatiable desire for the truth. Five went in; four came out. It now comes down to the basic, age-old question: Whodunnit? I had my guesses, to be sure, but Elston continually moved these characters like puppets on strings so that I was never entirely sure in my guess until the very end. She saves the big reveal for the last few pages, so close to the cover that you're scared to death you won't find out who the killer is. But then, in a flash of cameras and the thrill of justice being served, Elston closes the door on this case with a final, satisfying bang. The truth can set you free, but it can also bind you in shackles. Of course, this goes without saying, but I loved this book. It gave me chills, it kept me up all hours of the night, unable to put it down because "just one more chapter" turns into nearly finishing the book - it was glorious, and stunning, and everything in between. Highly, highly recommend!
