Blending literature and memoir, Ann Patchett, author of State of  Wonder, Run, and Bel Canto, examines her deepest commitments—to writing, family, friends, dogs, books, and her husband—creating a resonant portrait of a life in This is the Story of a Happy Marriage.

This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage takes us into the very real world of Ann Patchett’s life. Stretching from her childhood to the present day, from a disastrous early marriage to a later happy one, it covers a multitude of topics, including relationships with family and friends, and charts the hard work and joy of writing, and the unexpected thrill of opening a bookstore.

As she shares stories of the people, places, ideals, and art to which she has remained indelibly committed, Ann Patchett brings into focus the large experiences and small moments that have shaped her as a daughter, wife, and writer.

Ann Patchett is the author of six novels and three books of nonfiction. She has won many prizes, including Britain's Orange Prize, the PEN/Faulkner Prize, and the Book Sense Book of the Year. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she is the co-owner of Parnassus Books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Read - Collection of Personal Essays I absolutely loved this book. Though I've not read any of Ann Patchett's fiction (for which she is best known), I have read a lot of personal essays, and this collection of hers is fantastic. Why? In part, because she is both relatable and likable as a person. It doesn't matter what topic she's covering, whether it's her coming late to listening to opera, or her aging dog, or her writing career, or hiding from life for a week in an upscale hotel in order to get things done, Patchett is at once personal and professional. Her writing is superb. You feel like she is authentic on the page, like you've just met up with an old friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful collection I wish Ann Patchett was my aunt. She would make a wonderful aunt. I feel like I could tell her anything and she would understand and not be the least bit judgy. Her writing advice in "The Getaway Car" is perfect. Whether she's discussing life as a working writer, her first unhappy marriage, her second much happier marriage, or her relationship with her adorable grandmother, Patchett's insight is dead-on and wicked smart.

Editorial Reviews

“The best advertisement for Ann Patchett’s new collection of nonfiction is anything else Ms. Patchett has written...Ms. Patchett’s style is not overly confessional, but it is beguiling in ways that make her sound like someone you’d want to know.”
