Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not quite up to expectations Here is our next instalment of the Cat and Bones series which I have enjoyed since the first one I read. In this one there is war brewing between the vampires and the ghouls and of course Cat and Bones will need to put a stop to it, with the help of several friends. There are some great parts of this book, Marie always brings excitement to the book and this one was no exception, her trickery and manipulation are something to be revered. Vlad (who I still hope gets his own book) is wonderful as usual. There is some laugh out loud parts that make this series what it is; one in particular regarding Bones sparkling brought tears to my eyes. I also love how Frost has stayed true to her characters, Cat is still as stubborn as ever although she has realized she needs to trust and rely on some of her friends and family and Bones is still as sarcastic, loving and possessive as ever. However there was something lacking in this book. I’m not sure exactly what it was, predictability, slow moving plot, it’s hard to put it down to just one thing. Maybe Frost has just exhausted her characters a little bit. Then again the lead in to this months release was quite interesting, maybe we need to wait and read that one before we give final judgement on the future of this series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from War is coming.... So once again we return to Cat and Bones, and this time they're trying to prevent a war between the vampires and ghouls that would threaten the secrecy and safety of all supernatural creatures. All because one psycho ghoul is running around claiming Cat is some weird vampire/ghoul hybrid intent on subjugating all ghouls and making them slaves to the vampires. So what's a ghoul gonna do? Strike first of course! 'Cause, you know, it's always worked so well in the past.... But we're shown just how dangerous ghouls can be here, when we are brought back to the voodoo ghoul queen in Louisiana. She brings out most if not all the stops when Cat and Bones go to meet her again, and she is one scary creature. Fun thing though, Cat turns into quite the horn dog in this one, a condition that is both funny and hilarious on all sides when it crops up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bones doesn't sparkle This Side of the Grave is the 5th novel in the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I have loved this series not only for the main characters Cat & Bones but for the secondary characters like Vlad and Mencheres. Since the last book there has been rumors for a war between the species. Apployon the ghoul leader has been feeding the fire of the vampire/ghoul tension. He's been using Cat and her unusual dead abilities to fuel the tension to make the war happen. Cat and Bones relationship has grown over that past few books and their devotion to each other is the reason I love this series. You can see how much the characters have grown and changed. Cat is still stubborn, independent and headstrong but now realizes that her life includes the people she loves and she cannot make decisions for them but with them. There was a lot of laugh out loud moments in the book as there always is. Here is one of my favorite ones: Timmie gave Bones and me a speculative glance. “Before we go, I gotta know: If mind-reading abilities are real, there’s something else I wondered if fiction got right about vampires–” “Ask me if I sparkle and I’ll kill you where you stand,” Bones cut him off with utmost seriousness. This was a really good book and I still love this series but I found that this one I can really put down and not come back to it right away. (I usually devour these books in one day) I felt the war story line was loosing steam. I was glad to see all my beloved characters like Bones and Vlad. I felt this book was a "transition" book and I am really looking forward to the next installment. There were a lot of questions answered and a lot of new developments that make me excited for the next book. I really hope the this series doesn't loose steam that I have seen with many other of my favorite series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kitten does some growing up So after a two book hiatus (sort of), Frost is back and hotter than ever! This is my favorite paranormal series, and after five books I would expect it to begin to falter, to have a missed step, but there seems to be no way Jeaniene Frost can do any wrong! I absolutely LOVED this installment. I love that we are beginning to see Cat come into herself as a Vampire (albeit one with an occasional heartbeat and a lust for Vamp blood), to mature if you will. The love between her and Bones is stronger than ever,(there are some very tender moments between them) and as a reader you can't help but become more emotionally invested. But don't go thinking it's getting all sappy, the chemistry is still smoking hot, and there is plenty of a** kicking going on. All the gang is back, and I do mean everyone, which of course means plenty of one liners that will have you laughing your butt off ("premature inflamulation, happens sometimes. Very embarrassing, I don't like to talk about it.") - Oh Vlad, I can hardly wait for your book! As for the next book, due out later this year, I will be waiting with baited breath for it! A MUST read for sure, and possibly my favorite in the series so far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Got My Fix Book five in The Night Huntress series was no surprise amazing, there were so many great elements to this book and a big part of that was Cat and Bones and also Vlad ( one of my favs ) To say that I have missed this series is an understatement so when the release date for this book came out I had some high expectations and Frost delivered with gunz a blazing. The storyline was great the characters were wonderful as usual I mean come on we get a great dose of Bones and Vlad ( enter fan girl squeel ) so overall the book was amazing. I also have to point out that Jeaniene's writing is still one my favs her oneliners and dialogue always kill me, in a good way, and trust me I was chuckling a few times reading this book. If you want a book filled with great characters, writing, action, comedy and a whole lot of romance this is the book for you. This is a must have for all Frost Fans GO PICK IT UP. :0)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Can You Ever Go Wrong With Cat & Bones? I can breathe a little easier now that I’ve gotten my fix. My Cat & Bones fix that is. The last ‘Night Huntress’ book, Destined for an Early Grave, came out in July of 2009. July of 2009! True, Jeaniene Frost gave us some little teases last year in her ‘Night Huntress World’ books (which were quite good). But it’s just not the same as having a whole entire book about one of the most beloved couples in Paranormal Romance. *sigh* Bones…and Cat of course. Cat too. Not just Bones. Yummy Bones. Sexy Bones. Bones who says things that make my knees weak and makes me look at my husband and wish he had fangs and knew how to use them Bones. In This Side of the Grave, book 5 in Jeaniene’s awesome series, Cat is still getting slack for being a well…let’s just say an odd undead-ish vampire. This time, crazy ghoul guy Apollyon is using Cat as the reason ghouls should go to war against vampires. Yup, war against the vampires because they are all bad and stuff. Riiiight… And there’s the reason I call him ‘crazy ghoul guy’. The story follows Cat, Bones and friends as they try to thwart crazy ghoul guy and stop this pointless and stupid war. It’s a very well paced book that had me wondering what was going to happen next. In other words, this book was like the other books in this series – wonderful. I mentioned friends. I know you’re all wondering if you get to see all of the beloved characters you’ve grown to adore in this series. Well, let me tell you that you do! You see Mencheres, Kira, Spade, Denise, Tate, Juan, Don, Dave and even Fabien. Oh, am I missing someone? Hmm let me think. Oh yes…Vlad. *squee* Yup, he’s in here too. I am a total Vlad fangirl. I heart him. His wit, his sarcasm, his heart. Love love love. Can’t wait to get more details about his books! Don’t worry though, this is after all a Cat & Bones book so they are a plenty. I love the chemistry between these two. I always have. Their dialogue and banter is amazing. And there are a couple of scenes in this book that took my breath away. The words that Bones speaks or that Cat shares are just…*sigh* romantic to the core. If you love these two together as much as I do, then you will not be disappointed. Speaking of these two together…(how’s that for a segue?) Jeaniene is known to have at least one super hot scene in her books. She keeps that tradition alive in This Side of the Grave. I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to spoil things so I’ll just say this: Wowza! But it’s not just the sex. I think what makes Jeaniene’s love scenes stand out is that they are just that – love scenes. The emotion she mixes is with the naughty is so strong and well expressed that it makes you get emotionally involved with the characters all the more. It just makes our connection to them even stronger. And it makes reading these yummy scenes all the more satisfying. I was very happy with how This Side of the Grave continued Cat & Bones’ story. (I wonder if they’ll ever catch a break though and just be able to have a nice quiet weekend sometime.) The ending left a little bit of a smile on my face and I’m really anxious to see how Jeaniene handles that little twist. The wait won’t be very long this time around, thank goodness. Jeaniene is slated to release book 6 in her ‘Night Huntress’ series, One Grave at a Time, this fall.
