about

One girl bets her entire future on a race that she has no hope of winning.

How much can you rely on the family you're born into? What can't you accomplish with the family you make?

Astrid Sullivan's family can't catch a break. Her grandfather played cards and her dad bet on the Titans - half-horse, half-car that race around impossible tracks. They've lost their home, their savings, and each other.

So when Astrid makes some new friends who give her the chance to participate in this year's Titan races, she wonders if it's worth risking everything. She never thought she'd even touch a Titan, and this one is first gen when the models racing are Titan 3.0s. There's no way for her to win . . . but with her family slipping away and her dad without work, Astrid can't help but feel like the only person she can bet on is herself.

Titans delivers Victoria Scott's signature blend of incredible action and impossible odds, and will leave readers' hearts racing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun! 3.5? 4? Somewhere around there. This was a good book. Definitely. But it was much slower than I thought it would be, and sometimes I will admit I was a little bored. I went into this book thinking that it was about one long race that lasted a week or something. But it's about multiple short races. Like regular horse races, except the horses are robotic, and the races have traps and stuff in them. The races didn't start until about halfway through the book, and even after they started, there was less interesting stuff in between them. But I LOVED the races. The races were SO MUCH FUN and they were SO EXCITING and the last 100 pages or so of the book was fantastic. There were definitely parts before that that I thoroughly enjoyed as well, don't get me wrong, but the last 100 pages were super easy to just plow through because it was so intense. Also I cried twice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast-Paced & Heart Pounding Fast-paced and heart pounding, Victoria Scott's Titans has one of the most original concepts I've read in quite some time! It's a story of family, friendship, and the special bond between a girl and her horse. You get absolutely caught up in the excitement and suspense of the Titan races, where one misstep can cost you everything or win you glory. When Astrid has a chance to enter an early model Titan into this year's derby, she grasps the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save her family. Her father has lost their savings after a few bad bets on the Titans, and now the threat of foreclosure looms over their house. It doesn't help that her dad was laid off at the factory, and now spends most of his time at home or job searching. Astrid's life may be falling apart, but when she spends her days training and on the track, she can escape the tension at home and pretend everything is alright. Winning the derby is a long shot for a girl from one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Detroit, especially when her competitors all hail from the city's most privileged, wealthiest families. But Astrid isn't alone. Magnolia, her neighbour and best friend, is always right by her side, sharing in the adventure together. Magnolia's family is experiencing similar hardships, but she puts on a bright smile and cheers for Astrid every step of the way. What I loved about Astrid and Magnolia's friendship is that they support each other through thick and thin. They have their differences—Magnolia is an aspiring fashion accessory designer while Astrid is a math genius—but nothing could tear the girls apart. And Padlock! He stole my heart and soon became more than just a machine, though Astrid was stubborn to see him as only an intricate system of gears and parts at first. He slowly helps Astrid learn to trust again. To take a leap of faith. Defy the odds. Chase your dreams. Titans might be my first time reading a Victoria Scott novel, but it certainly won't be my last! I keep thinking I would love to see the Titans racing each other on the big screen. I'm sure the sight of powerful mechanical horses pounding down the track would be an awe-inspiring sight!

Editorial Reviews

Praise for Titans:"Right from the start, Scott commands attention with the simple yet compelling premise, which tackles topics of privilege and class as it entertains...Cinematic, but with real heart at its core, it's a thrilling SF update to the classic "girl and her horse" tale."- Publishers Weekly, starred review"This is a fun, fast-paced read. Astrid is a strong character anyone can identify with: she's headstrong and has trouble trusting those around her. The races are very lively and action-packed. Perfect for fans of Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races and Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games."- School Library Journal Praise for Victoria Scott:*"Mind-blowingly intense." - Kirkus Reviews, starred review" Tella is an especially strong and likable character, which makes this gripping adventure all the more enjoyable."- Booklist
