about

Set against the real history of Nashville’s Belle Meade Plantation and the original Fisk University Jubilee Singers ensemble, To Wager Her Heart is a stirring love story about seeking justice and restoring honor at a time in American history when both were tenuous and hard-won.

With fates bound by a shared tragedy, a reformed gambler from the Colorado Territory and a Southern Belle bent on breaking free from society’s expectations must work together to achieve their dreams—provided the truth doesn’t tear them apart first.

Sylas Rutledge, new owner of the Northeast Line Railroad, invests everything he has into this new venture, partly for the sake of the challenge. But mostly to clear his father’s name. One man holds the key to Sy’s success—General William Giles Harding of Nashville’s Belle Meade Plantation. But Harding is champagne and thoroughbreds, and Sy Rutledge is beer and bullocks.

Sy needs someone to help him maneuver through Nashville’s society, and when he meets Alexandra Jamison, he quickly decides he’s found his tutor. But he soon discovers that the very train accident his father is blamed for causing is what killed Alexandra’s fiancé and shattered her world.

Spurning an arranged marriage by her father, Alexandra instead pursues her passion for teaching at Fisk University, the first freedmen’s university in the United States. But family—and Nashville society—do not approve, and she soon finds herself cast out from both.

Through connections with the Harding family, Alexandra and Sy become unlikely allies. And despite first impressions, Alexandra gradually finds herself coming to respect and even care for this man. But how can she, when her heart is still spoken for?

Sy is willing to risk everything to win over the woman he loves. What he doesn’t count on is having to wager her heart to do it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feeds a reader's heart, mind and soul From time to time a book finds its way into your TBR pile that oozes special literary vibes that are hard to ignore. It looks good, it feels good -- it even smells good! And it clamors for attention until you pick it up and open the cover. And once you do -- there's nothing for it but to surrender to the beguiling story within. To Wager Her Heart is just that kind of novel. It's a story that feeds a reader's heart, mind and soul. The romance is deliciously sublime. Sy is the kind of all-encompassing hero that causes heart flutters and spine chills. He's purposeful in every thing he does. He's kind and sees deep into another's needs and then quietly goes about providing them. He's gallant with Alexandra even when she snubs him but relentless in his pursuit anyway. She's buried her heart with her fiance and panics when Sy starts to bring it to life again. Definitely an exquisite love story! I love the way Alexander incorporates real people and events from history into her stories. Her research is meticulous and I always come away having learned something new. This Canadian had never heard of Fisk University or the Jubilee Singers and I am woefully uneducated when it comes to the Reconstruction Era. Some startling facts merge with fiction leaving me breathless and aching. Harsh reality comes into sharp focus because history isn't always kind and taking a hard look at injustices from the past is difficult to do. But so necessary! So I finished this read a little battered and bruised. But hopeful too. Because Alexandra's and Sy's story celebrates the joy that comes in the midst of sorrow when you have the courage to place your faith wholly in the Lord. "You see, I believe that if the Lord tells me to jump through a wall, it is my part to jump -- and the Lord's to put me through it." (p 250) Facing fears, finding courage, being true to yourself and standing strong for justice -- these are just some of themes that make To Wager Her Heart such a memorable...and mesmerizing...novel. An incredible addition to Tamera Alexander's Belle Mead Plantation series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lacking Tamera's Signature Magic When the name Tamera Alexander is on a Christian Historical novel, it is usually one to pay attention to! “To Wager Her Heart” was published by Zondervan in the summer of 2017, and is the third and final installment in the Belle Meade Plantation saga. While I have not read the second book in the series, this one still made perfect sense and was not confusing in the least - clearly it would work well as a stand-alone novel. Set in 1871 Tennessee, “To Wager Her Heart” delves into numerous issues of the day; primarily the education, social struggles, and segregation of freedmen. Alexandra Jamison is a young lady whose heart is torn between the privileged life she’s always known and the life of a teacher she feels God calling her towards. Sylas Rutledge, a railroad man from Colorado, arrives in Nashville with two goals: gain investors for a new venture, and clear his beloved father’s name of a horrific tragedy. When Alexandra and Sy find themselves joining forces towards achieving their dreams, God’s beautiful plan for each of them slowly begins to unfold. While I enjoyed the heartfelt and thought-provoking story of “To Wager Her Heart”, I did not feel that it was Tamera’s best work. Although difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons why this story fell short, I believe several contributing factors include: numerous stories-within-the-story that were not all resolved by the end; lack of character depth and development; a speedy and convenient conclusion; and an overall much shorter novel than I’ve come to expect from Tamera (yes, the page-count is still high, but the font size is very large!). In conclusion, while this story was pleasant to read it simply did not sparkle or hold the almost-magical quality of writing and description that many of Tamera’s other books do. I’m hoping that she regains her beautiful writing voice in her next series, which already has a novella set to release in time for Christmas 2017. I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Book That Has Stayed With Me I loved the tenacity of the characters in this book, I loved the stories of their faith... how essential their belief in God was to their lives and how they hoped beyond their circumstances and trusted God's provision as they did the right thing even when it cost so much. I loved the pictures that Tamera painted with her words as she described the settings in this book, and I loved the unpredictability of the plot.  While I didn't find myself devouring this book as obsessively as I do with some books, I also didn't forget the story as quickly as I often do after reading a novel. This book had substance and meaning, and told a story that needs to be remembered. It challenged, it inspired, it entertained, and it was well-written. To me, that is a sign of a good book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Final novel in A Belle Meade Plantation series! To Wager Her Heart by Tamera Alexander is the latest A Belle Meade Plantation Novel. It is August of 1871 in Nashville, Tennessee. Alexandra Jamison is still grieving the loss of her fiancé, David Thompson who died one year prior in a train accident at Dutchman’s curve. Alexandra blames the train engineer, Harrison Kennedy for the incident. Barrett Jamison, Alexandra’s father, is pushing her to marry Horace Buford. Alexandra, though, wishes to do something meaningful with her life. After a disagreement with her father, Alexandra is out walking when she hears singing. It is the Fisk University Jubilee singers giving a concert and after the program there is an appeal for teachers. Alexandra has found what she wants to do, but is she ready for what it will cost her. Sylas Rutledge has arrived in Nashville to bid on the Belle Meade railroad project and to clear his stepfather, Harrison Kennedy’s name. Sylas is unprepared for Southern society after living in Colorado. He needs someone to help him navigate Nashville society. Sylas feels that Alexandra will be the perfect tutor, but Alexandra is less than willing to pair up with him. But after her father casts her out of his house when she refuses to marry Mr. Buford, Sylas’ offer to pay for her tutoring is answer to her prayers. Over time, Alexandrea grows to respect and start to care for Sylas. Their bond will be tested and Sylas could lose everything. To Wager Her Heart is nicely written and has a beautiful setting. The romance portion is light and subtle which I appreciated (it was predictable though). The main focus of the book is on Fisk University and the Jubilee singers (the hardship they endured on their journey). Ms. Alexander did a superb job with her research and incorporating it into her story. I like how she incorporated historical figures and events into her narrative. It was interesting to learn about the college as well as the struggles faced by the university, the faculty, and the students. It is a shame this historical tidbit was never included in school curriculum. The author did a remarkable job at capturing the time-period and locale. I did find the pace of the novel to be a little slower than I would have liked, but I have discovered that it is normal in novels rich in historical detail. The Christian element was just heavier than I would have liked (I prefer a lighter touch), but I liked the themes which included the power of prayer and trusting in God. My rating for To Wager Her Heart is 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). While To Wager Her Heart is part of a series, it can be a stand-alone novel. It is nice, though, to catch up on the characters from the other books in the series especially Uncle Bob. I am glad that I read To Wager Her Heart. It encouraged me to find out more about the Jubilee singers and Belle Meade.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOD has my heart To Wager Her Heart is a tender, sweet romance, but mostly it is Historical.  The book is telling you the stories of Sy and Alexandra, yes but it is also telling you the stories of the Belle Meade Plantation, the Jubilee Singers and Fisk University.  How the author weaves truth and fiction to make such a wonderful abundantly fun, mischievous, and outlandish.  Who knew about all those railroad accidents.  So, do the characters get what they have been planning with each other to get?  Does GOD see fit to give it to them?  You have to read it to find this and many many more fun things out.  I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are honest and all mine.
