A graphic novel is a new directionfor well known Vancouver artist, Michael Kluckner. Here, he re-visits a themefirst made famous by Joy Kogawa’s classic, Obasan. Although this story is verydifferent, it is from the point of view of two teenagers faced with themes ofinternment, wartime fears and issues of race, morality and social class alifetime ago.

In the Interior of BC, during World War II, Japanese-Canadians are exiled fromtheir homes on the Coast. Such is the fate of Toshiko and her cousin, who landon a farm near a small, hostile town. While in high school, Toshiko discoversthat not all residents see them as the enemy. One farm boy in particular fromher graduating class is curious about the plight of the Japanese-Canadians anda friendship develops that soon blossoms into a kind of Romeo-and-Julietromance. When their relationship becomes a scandal, he is thrown out of hishouse and sets off with Toshiko for Vancouver, where they attempt to establisha life together before the harsh reality of wartime Canada closes in on them..
