Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits—talents that make her attractive to the dead and the undead. The ghosts of the dead aren’t usually dangerous; they just like to talk…a lot.

The undead are another matter.

Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with vengeance on his mind, she’s forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection.

The undead senators won’t help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire—and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay....

Karen Chance has lived in France, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, but always comes back to America. She currently lives in Central Florida, the home of make-believe, which may explain a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Touch The Dark This is an urban fantasy with a twist. First book has a lot of information that might not stick at first but as the story progresses everything falls in to place. I love this series and highly recommend it to fantasy lovers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite book series I bought the first two books in this series just after the second was released. I was looking for a new series to get into, and hadn't realized they were the only two available at the time. I have followed along ever since, always impatiently waiting for the next book to come out, and it's always worth the wait. Cassie is a wonderfully dynamic character, full of strength and flaws, poor judgement and great courage. She is funny and easy to relate to. As some others have said, the first book starts a little slow as the world is introduced and back story explained, but each book really picks up the pace and I love how action packed they are. Highly recommend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Touch the Dark This book was awesome! I loved the main character. Cassie, even though she is human still has awesome powers and knows how to make it in a supernatural world. She is continuously met with challenges at every turn but she doesn't let that stop her. Brava Karen Chance!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing intricate world I'm on the 4th book in this series and I gotta say "Stick with it". The first book is very informative and you may get discouraged during the first book. But tough it out even if all the info doesn't sink in at first because this series is well worth it! Karen Chance has created an intricate world with new concepts and it's not your average vampire/witch/ghost world. There's structure to this world with councils, circles, and senates and each have their own set of rules and different views but one thing in common: Cassie Palmer, the untrained and often confused clairvoyant. The series is packed with conflict, adventures, steamy moments, and the occasional laugh too. I recommend :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slow start but great finish This book took me a bit to really get into, but once I did I actually really liked it. So here are my pros and cons with the first instalment in the Cassie Palmer series. One giant drawback is the writing style; it is extremely descriptive and ultra-lite on dialogue. It does make it a bit slow to read and Cassie seems to think and analyse every scenario very often, even when several groups are very actively trying to kill her. I found myself skipping some paragraphs which I don’t usually do. Now on to the good: I really like the idea for this universe, I was drawn by all of the characters; they were all complex and interesting. The action picks up in the second half of the book and it is well constructed. There is a nice balance to the mood: it’s darkish, but not overwhelmingly so. The book wraps up with loads of questions so I was happy to have had the next one and started on it immediately. For those who are thinking of giving this one a try go for it. The second book is really great I zoomed thought it and am getting 3 and 4 ASAP.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book I found this book a bit hard to get into. Lots of character's and can be lots of details, but once you get into it, it is action packed and a great read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super sexy. So seductive. Not the most well plotted out book ever written but that feeling could easily come from the fact that the entire story takes place over about two days and I am used to a longer timeline. An excellent book none the less. The action begins on the first page and the pace is kept up throughout. The character is well developed and stays true to the very end. We are introduced to yet another fascinating take on the supernatural world, rife with ghosts, vampires, mages and all kinds of fantastical creatures. Leaves you wanting so much more of everyone's story and an urge to see what other history and mythology the author will weave into her tales. Can't wait to read number two: Claimed By Shadow.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice start to a series.... leaves you wanting more Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking Mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with revenge in mind, she''s forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection. The undead senators won''t help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire- and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay. I rate this book 3.5/5. It was a great book and I really enjoyed it. The book was extremely fast paced and was, for the most part, a really easy read from the very beginning. Taking place over just a couple of days in Cassie's life with many twists and turns from those on her side. As the first book in a series, it leaves you wanting more, demanding your attention and practically forcing you to pick up the next book. My main issues with this book were the occasional info dumps. I seriously hate info dumps. I think working in the characters world and past that the author has created can be a tough thing to do, but it is critical to do it smoothly. I worked through it as I'm sure many do, but the paragraphs of back-information can seriously turn readers off, keeping them from reading more. The other issue was within some of these info dumps, the grammar was horrendous. Run on sentances making some of what the reader is being told unclear. But grammatical issues seem to be slightly more common in many books I'm reading and I think it's because the editors are missing it somehow... so I won't pin that on the author, especially one who for the most part has created a wonderful little universe full of interesting characters. Throughout the story, there was a little character growth within Cassie, the MC. But not a lot, Given that her story was left unfinished with many loose ends, obviously setting up for a second book, I'm okay with this. I suspect (and hoping) that we will see some growth within the second book. She appears very good at holding grudges and it makes for a bit of pouting... I'm sure she'll work through this. Overall, excellent book that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a fast paced, supernatural/fantasy read.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of Detail This is the story about a clairvoyant named Cassandra. She has the ability to see, hear, and speak to ghosts. She also gets unpredictable glimpses at the future and the past. She owns and wears a jewelled necklace that is haunted by a ghost named Billy Joe. She was raised by the vampire mafia. Because vampires are able to ‘feed’ without actually biting, almost everyone is unaware of their existence. Cassie also has a hard time deciphering between myth and legend as she has been told one too many bedtime stories. In Touch the Dark, Cassie comes across everything including vampires, Mages, Were-animals, witches, fairies, and ghosts obviously. She’s on the run from all of these things it seems. Everyone wants to use her for something or other, or they just want her dead. So she’s got the Vampire Senate looking for her along with the Vampire Mafia and two Mage Circles (one good and one evil). Each group seems to be aligning themselves with some other mythical being. At this point, I don’t fully have an opinion despite the fact that I’ve completed the novel. So much happens but so little happens. It took half of the book (no exaggeration) before it picked up. The first half of the book is just explanations on how everything works. This is a bunch of stories from Cassandra’s past. The second half, things get quite interesting as the story starts moving forward. I wish the whole book kept this pace, but so much is needed to be explained prior to. Read more at:

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read So I picked this book out purely for the cover.. It looked cool.. might as well give it a chance. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. The story was great and the characters very well developed. My only concern was the extremely long paragraphs of explanation in between simple sentences. It's like asking "How was your day?" and then going on to explain how the day came to be... then answering the question a full 2 pages later... You tend to forget the question. But then again, it was the first book and needed to explain a lot of info to the world she's created. I'm looking forward to the next book. All in all, it was a very good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Karen Chance is my new favourite author. Her characters are memorable and imaginative with tons of humor and wit. Cassie Palmer is the most realistic portrayal of a young, female heroine I have ever read. The book's plot is full of twists and turns, and while slightly predictable, the descriptive style of writing is fantastic. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes strong female heroines, vampires, love stories, or just a really good book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing Book If you like Laurell K. Hamilton, Keri Arthur or Kelley Armstrong you will like this book. I really like the main character and the fast paced page turning story line. There was never a dull moment from start to finish and I’m excited to see where Karen Chance takes her main character. I cant wait to read the sequel!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Enough Actual Story I think I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did because I've heard nothign but good things about the author. The problem wasn't her writing style so much as what she wrote... which was simultaneously too much and not enough. The play between Mircea nad Cassie near the end of the novel were like a compelte microcosm of the whole novel: just when things are starting to get good, the characters ahve to stop and tell a story. The action in the novel was constantly stopped so there could be a whole thesis on Chance's mythology and drawn out explanation about everything. It interrupted the flow constantly and was far more aggravating than interesting. Every time things were about to pick up and the story would be about to progress, Chance would stop everything for a lesson and explanation and because of that, it sort of ends up feeling like the novel is about nothing at all. The whole plot just gets buried under all these details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Anita Blake move over Cassie Palmer is a clairvoyant with a ghost for a side kick. Her hatred of vampires doesn't prevent her from finding herself in the centre of a supernatural power struggle involving vampires, mages and every other supernatural entity that either wants her dead or working for their side. Excellent read with compelling characters and plot. Must have for anyone that enjoys strong female characters, hot vampires and loads of action. Looking forward to the sequel and many more. Karen Chance is an author to watch!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic!! I loved this book. This is great story for those who enjoy a strong -but not over the top- heroine and sexy vampires galore. I really enjoyed the politics woven into the plot. Balanced with the right amount of action and romance I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a supernatural story with flare. I look forward to seeing more from this author.

Read from the Book

“Cassie, look at me.”I fought him, knowing from childhood that looking a vampire directly in the eyes made it easier for him to control you, but everyone ignored us, I guess under the assumption that I was just a lousy dancer.Unlike the legends, his body felt warm against mine and as smooth as muscled satin, but he may as well have been carved of steel for all the hope I had of breaking his hold. My pulse sped up and I thought I would faint when he bent his head and I felt lips trailing over my neck. I think my heart actually stopped as he delicately kissed the skin as if tasting the pulse under the surface. I felt like my blood could sense him; that it moved slower and thicker in my veins, waiting for him to set it free. I broke into a sweat that had nothing to do with the heat of so many bodies crowded into a small place. Was he going to kill me right there, in front of a couple of hundred witnesses?I should have known something like this was going to happen. Every time I trusted someone they betrayed me; every time I loved someone, they died. Since he was already dead, I guessed the pattern held true.
