Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lesson in learning I first came across this book in 2004, thought it looked interesting and was not disappointed. The description of how Circle of Justice works was new to me and I thought it was an excellent concept. Having led quite an active outdoor life in my twenties I could well relate to the conditions that Cole experienced in his year on the island and how he was able to eventually find himself through being at one with nature. Personally I loved it, and made sure that I looked out for further books by this author. I was delighted when the sequel was published. (As an adjunct to all of the above, after I had returned to the UK lent the book to three of my grandchildren, two of whom needed to learn to understand how to control some of their moods and feelings and I am pleased to say that the two in question admitted that the story gave them plenty of food for thought.)

When he brutally attacks a classmate his punishment is an alternative path based on a Native American tradition called the Circle Justice. Banished to a remote Alaskan island, Cole's rage and isolation lead him to another brazen attack. This time, his intended victim is the Spirit Bear of Native American legend--and the clumsy assault ends with Cole mauled nearly to death. Rescuers arrive to save Cole's life, but it is the attack of the Spirit Bear that is the start of Cole's long journey to accepting responsibility for his life and saving his soul.
